It's Friday and that means it's time for a question in a brand new Ask Away. This time we're discussing warehouses. The place where barrels are maturing. Which location impressed the Monkeys?

Hessel

I haven't visited many warehouses. I've visited almost all the distilleries on Islay and there, Bruichladdich's warehouse impressed me. Rows filled with oak barrels. Each one older or more unique than the other. The scent of maturing whisky and, of course, sampling a dram fresh from the barrel under the guidance of the late Duncan McGillivray. An experience I will never forget.

I've had the pleasure of visiting several warehouses. My first visit was to Deanston and it left an unforgettable impression. The delicious aroma that hundreds of maturing barrels collectively produce is simply amazing! What was notable was that it wasn't only Deanston barrels but also, for instance, from Tobermory. They call that risk spread.

I haven't visited a whisky warehouse yet. So, unfortunately I can't speak about the impressive quantity of barrels stored there. I would really love to visit one next time I'm nearby so that I can experience it in person, rather than admiring it in a video or photo. I'm particularly interested in seeing the inside of a Japanese warehouse.

For me, that would be Glen Scotia in Campbeltown, although this also had to do with the fact that this was the first time I conducted an interview in that warehouse. Last year, I had the opportunity to interview Iain McAlister there. What an incredibly nice and fun man! Generally, I always find it thrilling to be in a warehouse, the scent is magical every time, and the sight of barrels stacked to the ceiling is always impressive. I must admit, I also really liked Springbank!
