The Arbikie Distillery has added a new member to its now-beloved Cask Selection series. This six-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon Cask Matured edition is the fourth release, following earlier successes matured in PX, Armagnac, and rum casks.
With just 983 bottles available, this is once again a release that will catch the eye of collectors and fans of experimental Scotch whisky.
A bold step in the Cask Selection series
With the introduction of this six-year-old expression, the distillery takes things a step further. While previous releases each had their own character, this one brings something entirely new: the layered complexity of Cabernet Sauvignon.
The spirit is built on the signature rye single grain style of Arbikie’s
Highland Rye. The whisky then matured for six years in high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon casks, which has directly influenced both its color and flavor.
The distillery emphasizes that these wine casks were chosen for their intense fruit profiles and firm tannins: qualities that, according to the team, complement the natural spiciness of rye whisky.
Fruity and full of flavor
Maturation in Cabernet Sauvignon casks delivers a whisky with deep notes of blackcurrant, stewed plums, and subtle spice. The tasting notes are as follows:
- Nose: Salted caramel, dried strawberries, and licorice
- Palate: Milk chocolate, blueberry muffin, and toasted oak
- Finish: Gentle tannins and creamy
Limited and collector-focused
With only 983 bottles worldwide, this is a limited release.
What does the new whisky cost?
The whisky is priced at £250. Bottles are available via the official Highland Rye website.

- How should you drink Highland Rye Whisky?
It shines neat, with a few drops of water, or in cocktails that benefit from its spicy character, such as a Manhattan or Old Fashioned.
