It appears that The Macallan is set to launch yet another James Bond edition, as we reported this week. But the big question is: Do we truly crave this, or is it merely a collector's item bound to vanish within our display cabinets?
The association between James Bond and The Macallan is no longer a strange one. Since Daniel Craig poured a glass of Macallan in Skyfall, the partnership seems to have become a golden marriage. Luxury, British heritage, and a touch of exclusivity: it all aligns seamlessly with 007.
For The Macallan, it's a dream: a brand already symbolic of prestige is further linked to the most iconic spy in film history.
And fair is fair, the previous Bond release from The Macallan, a line of bottles in honor of 60 years of James Bond, was a smash hit.

To Drink or to Collect?

Collectors were lining up, bottles flew off the shelves, and on the secondary market, the price quickly soared to ridiculous heights. The unfortunate part was that those who simply wanted to crack open a bottle soon had to pay more. All this while a ticket for a James Bond movie is within nearly everyone's reach.
And therein perhaps lies the rub. How many times do we wish to repeat this act? A new Bond bottle from The Macallan would undoubtedly be splendidly packaged again, furnished with cinematic details and a hefty price tag. But will it still surprise us?

Another act or a true surprise?

Or has it now become predictable, somewhat like the umpteenth Bond movie with a familiar recipe: fast cars, exotic locations, attractive Bond girls, and a martini?
That's not to say it's pointless. For collectors, a new release is naturally a treat. The hype, the hunt, the knowledge that you have a piece of pop culture in your hands: that's a thrill in itself.

Whisky for a wider audience

Furthermore, it puts whisky back on the map for a broader audience. People who might never normally buy a bottle of The Macallan might do so now. That in itself is pure gain, particularly in the present whisky landscape.

Drinking remains essential

Though one might question if such a new Macallan release is a good idea. Isn't it all about drinking, discovering, and sharing whisky? Bond or no Bond, a bottle is ultimately meant to be opened, preferably in good company.
So, are we waiting for another James Bond bottle from The Macallan? The honest answer is twofold. The collector in us says: absolutely, bring it on. The drinker in us thinks: perhaps it’s time to simply pour ourselves a glass without cinematic frills.
After all, whisky doesn't need Bond to be exciting, does it? Although one thrilling question remains: Who is the real new James Bond?
