Johnnie Walker has unveiled a brand-new release. This time it’s a fresh take on the classic Black Label: sweeter, creamier, and more approachable than its predecessor. Here’s everything you need to know about Johnnie Walker Black Cask.
With
Johnnie Walker Black Cask, the brand introduces its first new permanent blended Scotch whisky since 2011. The whisky was crafted by Dr. Emma Walker, Johnnie Walker’s Master Blender.
Three distilleries in a tasty blend
Her starting point for the blend was the iconic Johnnie Walker Black Label. She selected the most expressive whiskies from that blend to shape the new Black Cask. The following distilleries are represented in Black Cask:
- Cameronbridge Distillery
- Glen Elgin Distillery
- Roseisle Distillery
No age statement
The new Johnnie Walker Black Cask features a striking detail on its label. While Black Label traditionally carries an age statement, the Black Cask does not. Rather than spotlighting age, this whisky puts the emphasis on cask character.
Whereas Johnnie Walker Black Label is partially matured in European oak, Black Cask is aged 100% in ex-bourbon barrels from Kentucky. These casks impart sweeter, spicier notes during maturation than European oak. The result keeps the soul of the classic Black Label intact, while delivering a much softer flavor profile.
A Scotch whisky that will win over bourbon lovers
Flavor-wise, this new blended Scotch leans into vanilla, caramel, and gentle wood tones. Below are the full tasting notes for Johnnie Walker Black Cask:
- Nose: notes of vanilla, fudge, caramel candy, toasted marshmallow, honeycomb, and butterscotch.
- Palate: Sweet and creamy with spicy accents, soft vanilla, coffee bean, caramel, and toffee.
- Finish: Soft and mellow, with lingering warm oak.
The whisky is bottled at 43% Alcohol by volume (ABV).
