Asia continues to astonish the whisky world. At the World Whisky Masters 2026, distilleries from
Taiwan, South Korea,
China,
India, and
Japan once again proved that top quality no longer comes solely from Scotland.
Kavalan in particular left an indelible mark on the competition, while surprising names from South Korea and India also made a strong impression.
Asia keeps raising the bar
The World Whisky Masters is among the most prestigious international
whisky competitions. Unlike many
whisky awards, all entries are blind-tasted by panels of seasoned whisky journalists, buyers, bartenders, and spirits specialists. The jury judges solely on what’s in the glass.
The 2026 edition produced another impressive slate of winners, with Asian whiskies taking center stage. The Single Malt category was especially strong, racking up no fewer than 14 Master Awards.
Kavalan is the big winner of 2026
Scan the results and one name leaps out again and again:
Kavalan from Taiwan.
The Taiwanese distillery captured an incredible 10 Master Awards and also took home the competition’s top honor. Kavalan Podium Single Malt Whisky was crowned Taste Master, the best whisky of the entire World Whisky Masters 2026.
According to the judges, this whisky marries intense aromas of baked stone fruits and dried fruit with a long finish packed with gingerbread and warming spices. With that, Kavalan set itself apart from all other international entries.
And it didn’t stop there. The following whiskies also received coveted Master Awards:
- Kavalan Solist Peated Single Cask Strength
- Kavalan Solist Manzanilla Sherry Single Cask Strength
- Kavalan Solist Palo Cortado Sherry Single Cask Strength
- Kavalan Distillery Select No.2
- Kavalan Rhythm of Taiwan Collection Ocean
- Kavalan Wine Oak
- Kavalan Port Oak
- Kavalan Lan
- King Car Conductor Single Malt
On top of that, Kavalan amassed another 18 Gold Awards, making the Taiwanese producer by far the most successful distillery of the competition.
South Korea surprises with two Master Awards
It wasn’t just Taiwan that impressed. South Korea also proved it’s a serious player on the international whisky stage. The relatively young Ki One Whisky Distillery won two Master Awards right out of the gate.
The judges were especially taken with Ki One Unicorn, praised for its aromas of heather honey, malt, hay, and subtle cinnamon.
Ki One Signature also earned the highest accolade. According to the jury, this whisky delivers a surprisingly spicy profile with notes of amaro, tree bark, licorice, and herbs, without ever feeling heavy or cloying.
