Cara Laing, the managing director of Douglas Laing & Co., marks 20 years in the whisky industry. The milestone not only shows her personal experience, but marks a historic moment for the family-owned company.
Douglas Laing was established in 1948, and it is one of the most renowned independent bottlers in
Scotland. With Cara Laing as managing director the third generation of the family is running the whisky company.
From family memories to a whisky career
Laing is no exception, as she joined the firm with a deep attachment to whisky. Growing up between whisky casks, she was moving around with tales, samples, and casks from her great-grandfather, who worked in the industry.
However, she started her career outside the family business. Throughout this period, she was experiencing in branding, trade relations, and the general spirits market. At length, he had a chance to go with
Douglas Laing. What used to be just a family business has now become a long-term profession.
Growth during two decades in the industry
The whisky industry has changed quite a bit within the last decades. There has been strong demand among enthusiasts for regional styles, single-cask releases, and small-batch whiskies. Douglas Laing jumps into that with the Remarkable Regional Malts, a whiskyrange covering all of the Scotch whisky regions.
During the past 20 years Douglas Laing has remained true to its fundamental strategy. The company packs their whisky naturally, without chill filtering or colour, in their bottles. Several popular lines have been increased in the rule of Laing.
These are the Remarkable Regional Malts range and the internationally distributed Old Particular and XOP ranges. In an
exclusive interview Laing told Whisky Monkeys her personal favorites remain the Scallywag whiskies.
Marking the anniversary
Laing has chosen three Old Particular bottlings that are personally meaningful to her to commemorate the event. A fourth new bottling will also be added to the range.
Discussing the milestone, Laing said she is lucky to have spent 20 years in an industry she is passionate about. She further explained that the trip has introduced her to many talented personalities and provided worthwhile experiences throughout the whisky industry.
A continuing independent legacy
Douglas Laing is still an independent whisky company headquartered in Glasgow. The bottler takes single-cask and small-batch Scotch whiskey supplies from distilleries throughout Scotland.
In the future, the company reports that it will continue to emphasize authenticity, regionality, and the long-term sustainability of its whisky brand.
