It may sound odd, but simply thinking about a particular drink can influence how you feel. According to a new study, thinking about whisky, tequila, or wine can even trigger a specific mindset, without taking a single sip.
FAQ
  • Can just thinking about whisky really change your mindset?
Yes. Research shows that simply thinking about certain types of alcohol can activate particular associations. For whisky, traits like confidence and strength are more likely to be triggered, even if no one takes a drink.
  • Why does whisky have this effect on people?
Because of cultural associations. Whisky is often linked to status, strength, and self-assurance. When people think of whisky, their brains can automatically call up those qualities.
  • Does this mean drinking whisky changes your personality?
Not necessarily. The research mainly shows that just thinking about a drink can activate certain stereotypes or expectations. It’s about psychological associations, not a lasting change in personality.
That’s the conclusion of a study recently published in the academic journal Young Consumers. The researchers found that different types of alcohol evoke strong cultural associations that can directly influence our mood and expectations.

What happens when you only think about whisky?

The study examined the psychological associations people have with different kinds of alcohol. The results were clear.
When participants thought of whisky, they often linked it to qualities such as:
  • strength
  • self-confidence
  • masculinity
  • toughness
Whisky, in other words, tended to spark a distinctly masculine mindset. Wine, by contrast, was mostly associated with elegance and refinement, while tequila conjured a party-forward, celebratory vibe.
An important detail: participants didn’t drink any alcohol at all. They were only asked to think about a particular drink.

How was the research conducted?

The research team ran four studies with a total of 429 participants. In the first two, they explored which words people spontaneously linked to different types of alcohol.
Next, participants were randomly assigned one drink: wine, whisky, or tequila. They were then asked to indicate to what extent they felt certain qualities when thinking about that drink.
The researchers grouped the results into three clear mindsets:
  • Sophisticated mindset: words such as elegant, classy, and refined
  • Masculinity mindset: words such as strong, tough, confident, and masculine
  • Party mindset: words such as energetic, festive, and social
The patterns were remarkably consistent. Tequila was almost always tied to celebration and energy, wine to elegance, and whisky to strength and confidence.

Alcohol as a cultural symbol

According to Logan Pant, the lead researcher from the University of Evansville, the study shows that alcohol also plays a symbolic role.

Whisky: cultural imagery, marketing, and social experience

In other words, the feelings we attach to a drink don’t just come from the alcohol itself, but also from cultural imagery, marketing, and social experiences.
Think of whisky in movies, where it’s often sipped by powerful or enigmatic characters. Those images can subtly shape how we experience the drink.
The study highlights just how strongly cultural associations can influence our behavior. Even without drinking, certain beverages can spark an expectation or a mood.
The research shows that whisky isn’t just a flavor experience, it’s also a cultural symbol.
