In
Scotland, the
Oban Distillery has unveiled a brand-new whisky. This new single malt marries maritime character with a sweet, fruity influence. Meet the Oban 15 Year Old Port Cask Finish.
The whisky first surfaced in August 2025 in the U.S. TTB database, but has now been officially announced by parent company
Diageo. For now, the release is confirmed for the United States, though a global rollout seems likely.
What is the Oban 15 Year Old Port Cask Finish whisky?
The Oban 15 Years Port Cask Finish is part of an exclusive series in which fifteen-year-old whisky receives an extra maturation in fortified wine casks. The whisky first matured in American oak hogsheads, followed by a finish in carefully selected American oak port casks.
The idea behind this expression draws on the historic ties between port cities. Oban played a key role in maritime whisky trade, while the Portuguese city of Porto has been the heart of the port wine trade for centuries. That shared heritage underpins this whisky, where coastal influences meet the fruity depth of port.
How does Oban Port Cask Finish taste?
Diageo has also released the official tasting notes. They are as follows:
- Nose: Opens with fruity, dry white wine, notes of raspberries and vanilla ice cream, alongside Oban’s signature maritime aromas of sea breeze and warm sand.
- Palate: A soft, creamy-smooth texture delivers honeyed sweetness and juicy red fruits. Subtle salinity and a peppery spice then unfold.
- Finish: Short to medium and dry, with lingering white pepper.
This special release is bottled at a robust 52.1% ABV, combining Oban’s hallmark maritime character with the sweet, fruity influence of port casks.
Second release in the 15-year cask-finished series
The new bottling follows the earlier Oban 15 Cask Strength Sherry Cask Finish, making it the second release in the series. The whisky isn’t available to everyone just yet.
This limited edition carries a suggested retail price of 130 dollars and is already on shelves in the United States. The timing of a global release remains unclear.
