The Mackmyra distillery has been saved from its demise. At the very last moment, the former owner managed to join forces with an investment firm to breathe new life into the Swedish whisky distillery.
The lights were already turned off and Mackmyra was distilling no more. The fate of the bankrupt distillery lay in the hands of a liquidator who had to sell everything. Lennart Hero, the former owner of Mackmyra, decided to try to save the distillery.
However, a substantial amount of money was needed for this. He could cough up part of it himself. The remaining money came from an unexpected corner: investment company No.1 Capital AB. This party had previously looked into a possible takeover of Mackmyra, but decided to back out for economic reasons.

'Mess cleaned up'

An amount of 100 million Swedish crowns was paid for the distillery. This is approximately 8.8 million euros. Hero indicates that this immediately 'cleans up' the 'mess' (or the debt) that initially led to the bankruptcy. He is incredibly pleased with the fresh start.
‘I have no idea if our bid was the highest. But I think that the liquidator felt we had the best concept for the future of Mackmyra.’
- Lennart Hero

Mackmyra's future and whisky casks secured

When the Swedish distillery went bankrupt, it seemed for a moment as if the casks in which aficionados had invested would be lost. Hero says that he will prioritize ensuring that they can still bottle their whisky according to the agreements made.
Furthermore, he emphasizes the importance of the distillery's future plans. Now that a clean slate is present, Hero is first looking to his staff. There is indeed a significant amount of passion and knowledge of the divine drink present. Together with them, he wants to establish a solid foundation for the coming years.
