Each year, whisky makers from across the globe vie for the coveted title of Whisky of the Year. That honor doesn’t always go to Scotland. In fact, this is the second consecutive year Kavalan has won the IWC’s top prize. In 2025, the title went to the Kavalan Solist Fino Sherry, which scored 97.04 points. In the 2026 edition, the Taiwanese distillery also captured eight spots in the top 15.

Why Kavalan Peatist Oloroso is the best whisky of 2026

The winning whisky is made with lightly peated barley and matured entirely in Oloroso sherry casks. The result is a refined interplay of gentle peat smoke with dark fruit notes, chocolate, and warming spice. Taiwan’s heat and humidity accelerate maturation, giving Kavalan its signature rich, creamy character.
According to the judges, the whisky stood out for its depth, balance, and complexity. The evaluation took place during a rigorous blind tasting, with no information provided about brand, origin, or alcohol strength.
