It’s celebration time at
Torabhaig Distillery in
Scotland. The Skye distiller has released its first whisky to join the permanent core range. The single malt is called Taigh and carries a gentle smokiness.
Torabhaig describes Taigh as the embodiment of its house style, where soft peat smoke is woven together with sweet and spicy notes. They call it “Smoke with Taste.”
A whisky at the heart of the distillery
The name Taigh is fitting, it’s Gaelic for “home.” Neil MacLeod Mathieson, whisky maker at
Torabhaig Distillery, says the release reflects what the Scottish distillery has been striving toward for years.
'Taigh is the heart of Torabhaig. This whisky shows what we’ve aimed for since day one: an elegant, balanced whisky with real character, where smoke lifts the flavor rather than dominates it.'
- Neil MacLeod MathiesonThe whisky matured in first-fill bourbon casks, refill bourbon casks, and a selection of Madeira casks. These bring notes of honey and sweet spice, along with an extra layer of fruity sweetness.
Subtle smoke in a new Skye single malt
The distillery’s website shares the full tasting notes, which are as follows:
- Nose: Gentle coastal smoke and flint, intertwined with earthy forest aromas. Layers of baked apple, maple syrup, raisins, and light spices such as cinnamon and clove follow.
- Palate: Light to medium-bodied with a smooth, slightly oily texture. Notes of vanilla custard, toasted almond, and dried fruit give way to elegant smoke.
- Finish: Warm and persistent with toasted oak, light tannins, and spicy hints of cinnamon and clove, trailing into a lasting yet friendly smoke.
The whisky is bottled at 46% alcohol by volume (ABV).
