Laphroaig quarter casks whisky
At the busy Sint-Pieters Station in Ghent, a confrontation between three men spiraled out of control last Friday. What began as a heated argument at the station entrance erupted into a violent brawl in which a full bottle of whisky was used as a weapon. One of the men, a 34-year-old, is now behind bars.
According to a witness, the argument broke out around ten in the evening, right next to the station’s main entrance. The three men clashed verbally, but the mood shifted quickly.
The suspect allegedly lashed out with a full bottle of whisky, striking one of the victims hard on the head. The victim immediately collapsed and lay motionless.
The incident occurred while many travelers were still on the move, which only added to the chaos. Bystanders immediately alerted emergency services.

Police on the scene quickly

Ghent police arrived within minutes and found the severely injured victim still unconscious. He was rushed to the hospital, where he remains admitted. Little is known for now about his exact condition.
The second victim, who was also involved in the altercation, sustained an eye injury but was able to remain at the scene. The third man, the suspected assailant, was arrested on the spot.

Prosecutor confirms detention

The East Flanders public prosecutor’s office reports that the 34-year-old suspect was brought before the investigating judge after his arrest. The judge ordered his detention on suspicion of intentional assault. The man appeared before the council chamber on Tuesday, where his detention was confirmed and extended.
The investigation into the exact cause of the conflict is ongoing. The prosecutor’s office is reviewing station CCTV and interviewing witnesses to reconstruct how the dispute unfolded.

Whisky as an unusual weapon

What stands out in this incident is the use of a bottle of whisky as a weapon. Whisky bottles are made of thick glass and can cause severe bodily harm on impact.
It’s sad to read that a drink meant to be savored was used in such a way. We wish the victims strength and a swift recovery.
