Torabhaig Sound of Sleat
Autumn is in full swing as we write this review, and the weather in the Netherlands currently feels a lot like the Isle of Skye. The wind is a constant companion, the days are getting shorter, mornings are cool and misty, and the cozy sweaters are coming out. The weather may not be perfect, but it’s ideal for a good glass of whisky. Welcome to our review of Torabhaig Sound of Sleat.

An new chapter in the Legacy Series

The Legacy Series is a run of limited editions that showcase how Torabhaig’s style has evolved, and continues to evolve, over the years. The series will ultimately lead to its first fully matured whisky: a 10-year-old bottling. The distillery team clearly revels in exploring the many faces of peat, creating whiskies with gentle, refined smoky notes. At the distillery they call it smoke with taste.
Chapter 4, the Sound of Sleat edition, fits that brief perfectly. The name refers to a narrow, powerful strait that separates Skye from the Scottish mainland, known in Gaelic as Linne Shlèite. This whisky has matured between 5 and 6 years, entirely in American oak; a combination of ex-bourbon casks and new oak.
To be precise, the composition is as follows:
  • 75% first-fill bourbon casks
  • 20% virgin American oak
  • 5% refill bourbon casks
Furthermore, it’s bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered, with no added color. The spirit is made from a mix of Concerto and Laureate barley varieties, promising an expressive, characterful single malt.

A small work of art

We pour a generous measure into our Glencairn glass and let the whisky rest for a few minutes. In the meantime, we take a closer look at the bottle and label. The latter is a little work of art in its own right.
The illustration was created by Skye-based artist Ellis O’Connor, with the aim of capturing the rugged coastline around the distillery. It succeeds beautifully: the image radiates a calm, soothing atmosphere.
Now for the most important part: the taste. On the nose we find sweet, citrusy notes alongside seaweed and a salty sea breeze. Subtle tobacco adds depth to the smoke. The palate follows the nose with sweet tones of honey and vanilla and a hint of something waxy. Flavors of nori (seaweed) give the whisky a distinctly coastal character, while white pepper and gentle spices emerge in the background. The finish is medium, elegant, and smoky with a pleasant, lingering warmth.

Conclusion Torabhaig Sound of Sleat (Legacy Series) Review

This whisky captures exactly what you’d hope for from a young Isle of Skye single malt. Robust yet balanced, smoky yet refined. The combination of soft peat, sweet vanilla, and a maritime character makes it both approachable and highly appealing, especially on stormy autumn nights when the wind howls outside.
For around €60, it offers excellent value for money. It not only tells the story of Torabhaig’s evolving style, but also offers a promising glimpse of what’s to come. If this is a preview, the first fully matured release will be well worth the wait.
+ Balanced peat profile: rich but not overpowering, allowing other flavors to shine.
+ Elegant finish
- Limited availability, as it’s a restricted edition
