Where does the name Crazy Cock Whisky come from?

South Seas was founded in 1984 to produce malt spirit and, a few years later, began distilling malt whisky in copper pot stills. When the family behind South Seas decided to seriously invest in Indian single malt, the market for it was barely developed. The distillery itself describes a time when very few producers dared to focus on single malt from India. Even so, large copper pot stills were installed, followed by heavy investment in whisky maturation capacity.

That’s the “Crazy” part of the identity. In hindsight, it might seem obvious that India would develop its own single malt industry, but at the time it was a decidedly bold move.

The word “Cock” refers to the rooster you see throughout the brand’s look and feel. The symbolism fits the idea of a new dawn. South Seas describes the launch of its own brands as a new chapter for a distillery that for a long time primarily produced spirits for other companies.

Indian single malt from Maharashtra

Crazy Cock Whisky is made in Dahanu on India’s west coast. For the whisky, South Seas uses six-row Indian barley sourced from North India. The spirit is traditionally distilled in copper pot stills.

The Indian climate also plays a major role. Dahanu sits between the Arabian Sea and the Sahyadri Mountains. The warm coastal climate drives a more intense interaction between whisky and wood than in many cooler whisky regions.

The first two Crazy Cock whiskies appeared in 2023. Crazy Cock Rare matures in both bourbon and sherry casks and is designed as a full-bodied Indian single malt where the influence of both cask types comes together. Dhua takes a smokier path, combining sherry and bourbon notes with peated malt.

Crazy Cock has continued to experiment. The brand has also released whisky finished in former Madhuca or Mahura casks, linking a distinctly Indian drinking tradition to single malt whisky.
