Deanston has strayed somewhat with its new whisky. The distillery has launched a 17 year old
single malt whisky that has been aged in orange wine casks, which is not very common in Scotch. It is being released in a worldwide edition of 7,000 bottles, which is rather limited, even considering the unusual choice of cask.
A cask option with a personal narrative
This is the release that was influenced by master blender Julieann Fernandez, and the concept behind it is rather intimate. The casks are Andalucian in Spain, which is closely related to her family history.
She said that these early experiences were the ones that affected the way she handled the whisky. My parents met in Andalucia and a lot of my memories were related to the flavours and the atmosphere there and hence the role those memories played in the final profile, she said.
How the new Deanston whisky was matured
The whisky was aged 15 years in ex-bourbon casks, and that is what makes it have that familiar Deanston foundation of honeyed sweetness and a slightly waxy feel. Then it was aged two years in
Vino de Naranja casks, which are prepared with bitter orange peel.
These casks are not used often but deliver in terms of flavor. It is in the additional days of the finishing in the orange wine casks that the whisky acquires its citrus advantage and somewhat more complex nature.
Fernandez explained the release as being a matter of timing and not merely a matter of maturing. She stated that every cask was different and this meant that the team had to take time to balance everything before bottling.
Whisky will tell you when it is ready, she said. The two years in the orange wine casks seemed to be the correct moment to counter the citrus bitterness with the natural sweetness of Deanston.
How does Deanston Orange Wine Cask 17 Year Old taste?
- Nose: Light citrus, light stone fruits, and honey, light nutty.
- Palate: bitter orange, roasted nuts, malty biscuit, and soft sweetness.
- Finish: Long and a bit drying with citrus oils and light spice.
Another emphasis on cask experimentation
This is the second cask-finished tequila release by Deanston, and it indicates that the distillery is still experimenting with non-traditional cask finishes. The underlying spirit remains the same, but the finishing style obviously becomes the point of difference.
It is as though the distillery is getting more at ease with it, particularly when drinkers seek something a little out of the ordinary with regard to the standard maturation styles.
Where can I buy the Deanston Orange Wine Cask?
The whisky is bottled at 53.6% ABV and sells at approximately 95 pounds per 70cl bottle. It will be available for sale starting March 26, 2026, at a range of retailers and on the
distillery website.
With such a small number of bottles and the strange cask effect, it will draw the interest of collectors and curious drinkers.
