Game of Thrones is getting a few brand-new whiskies and they come from an unexpected source. Kyrö Distillery has joined forces with Warner Bros to release the Game of Thrones bottlings Whisky of Fire and Whisky of Blood.
For fans of the award-winning HBO series and lovers of distinctive whisky this collaboration is more than noteworthy. Game of Thrones has long inspired collectors to hunt down anything related to the series, but the whiskies themselves are special, too: both are 100% Finnish rye whiskies.
Game of Thrones gets Finnish rye whisky
The two new rye whiskies are named to fit seamlessly into the world of Game of Thrones. Whisky of Fire and Whisky of Blood evoke the series’ dark, dramatic atmosphere, famed for power struggles, sudden twists, and iconic family feuds.
Like Diageo’s extensive Game of Thrones range, these whiskies are limited editions. In this case, each expression is capped at 7,000 bottles. The odds that this new series will become highly collectible are strong, not just because of the limited run.
Kyrö’s deal with Warner Bros spans two years, suggesting this is only the tip of the iceberg. There’s almost certainly more to come in the lineup, though Kyrö has not officially confirmed this.
The distillery has provided detailed descriptions of the two whiskies, which differ quite a bit in style.
Whisky of Fire is Kyrö’s smoky Game of Thrones whisky made from 100% rye. It blends wood-smoked and peat-smoked rye malt, matures in ex-bourbon casks, and is finished in rum casks. Production involves ex-bourbon barrels, new American oak, and seasoned Colombian rum casks. The bottle is 700 ml and bottled at 46.6% alcohol by volume (ABV).
Whisky of Blood is a Game of Thrones whisky from Kyrö crafted from 100% malted rye. It matures in ex-bourbon and French oak casks, giving it a different character from the smoky Fire edition. The whisky comes in a 700 ml bottle at 46.0% ABV.
Kyrö’s Whisky of Fire and Whisky of Blood are arriving sooner than you might think. Shipments are already en route to France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, and China, among others.
It’s not yet known whether the Kyrö whiskies will come to the Netherlands. Pricing also has yet to be revealed.
