The Netherlands woke up early Thursday to a bizarre break-in that’s now blowing up on social media. What do a bottle of whisky, deep-fried shrimp, and one man have in common? Let us break it down for you.
Welcome to this Monday morning, where we’re kicking off the day with some light-hearted whisky news. Because last week something truly outlandish happened involving a thief. Late Thursday night, police received a report of a suspicious situation in the Natuurkundigenbuurt.
What followed was a nighttime chase that even seasoned officers described as 'unusually chaotic.'
According to police, a 39-year-old man from Haarlem broke into a shed at a home. Not only did he leave a trail of damage, he also staged a series of scenes more fitting for a movie than your average break-in.
Whisky, shrimp, and a deep fryer take center stage
Once inside the shed, the suspect reportedly found a bottle of whisky and drank it dry. As if that weren’t enough, he also took shrimp from a freezer at the property. He then fried the shrimp on the spot, leaving behind bits of food, glass, and grease in and around the garden.
The mix of booze, food, and destruction made for a spectacle that still has neighbors scratching their heads. Or should we say: in shock?
Rooftop escape and damage in the neighborhood
When police arrived, the situation spiraled further into chaos. The suspect fled through nearby gardens and managed to scramble onto a roof. Neighbors watched as he moved across several rooftops, prompting a large-scale search across the area.
During his escape, the man allegedly threw a roof tile down, which struck a parked car and caused damage.
How does someone even come up with this, you might wonder? While it hasn’t been officially confirmed, rumor has it the man had snorted something beforehand. Well, we all know this isn’t exactly the kind of thing you do sober, right?
Drone deployed in nighttime arrest
Police used several tools to track the man down, including a drone and a special unit. A few hours later, around 7:30 in the morning, the suspect was finally arrested in a nearby shed.
He is suspected of burglary and vandalism and is currently in custody pending further investigation. Police have not released additional details about the man’s condition.
IJmuiden reeling from a surreal night
The incident has sparked a wave of reactions both locally and online. It’s the combination of
theft, damage, and that striking “culinary interlude” that makes this case so extraordinary.
Residents are calling it a night they won’t soon forget…
The big question: Which whisky do you think he drank? Any guesses?
