Some time ago it emerged that the Belgian whisky maker behind Belgian Owl whisky was in trouble. Now the distillery is looking for a new owner who can start production at the drop of a hat.

The renowned Belgian distillery in Fexhe-le-Haut-Clocher is officially up for sale. Auction house Auctim is seeking a buyer for the distillery. Auctim states that this is the sale of a fully operational distillery and calls it “a rare opportunity within the European drinks industry.”

The sale includes not only the distillery itself, but also a large stock of maturing whisky and all associated infrastructure. In other words, it’s a turnkey operation: a business you can take over and run from day one.

Not just any distillery

The Owl Distillery is no small-time whisky maker. Founded in 2004 by master distiller Etienne Bouillon, it specializes in Belgian single malt whisky.

In recent years, the distillery has made quite a name for itself internationally. The whisky has, among other accolades, been named “European Whisky of the Year” by Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible.

A standout feature of the distillery is its pair of copper stills from 1898, sourced from the former Caperdonich Distillery in Scotland. These historic stills lend production a unique character with a clear nod to Scotch whisky tradition.

The sale covers the fully equipped distillery with an annual production capacity of around 1 million liters. But that’s not all. It also includes more than 3,500 200-liter casks at various stages of maturation.

Some of these stocks are up to 20 years old, significantly increasing the value of the inventory. There’s also an existing bottling line, so production and sales can continue immediately.
