Whisky regularly makes an appearance in films, though not always in the way you’d expect. In Digger, starring Tom Cruise, a glass of whisky sets up a comic moment aboard a plane. And perhaps a new whisky fan is born in the process.
In Digger, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Tom Cruise plays the eccentric Digger Rockwell, a fabulously wealthy businessman trying to save the world from a disaster he caused himself. It sounds like a pretty serious story, but the film has its fair share of humour too. And whisky takes centre stage in one of its funniest moments.

A drink at cruising altitude

On a flight, Digger is sitting beside environmental scientist Dr. Ganesh. He pours himself a drink and asks his travelling companion what he’d like.
Ganesh doesn’t have to think twice. He says he likes barrel-aged rum. Digger responds in a rather unusual way. Turning around with a full glass for Ganesh in his hands, he says, “How could I have known?”
Ganesh looks baffled. Has Digger somehow guessed what he wanted to drink? For a moment, it seems that way—until Ganesh takes a sip.
He immediately spits it out and exclaims, “This is whisky!” Digger replies dryly, “Yes, I told you: how could I have known?”
It’s a wonderfully absurd moment that shows just how little the self-assured businessman cares about what other people want—not even when it’s something as simple as a drink.

Whisky after all?

The funny thing is, that’s not the end of it. Later in the film, we see Dr. Ganesh with whisky again. This time, he doesn’t need Digger to put a glass in his hand. He pours himself another.
Naturally, that raises an interesting question. Has the environmental scientist acquired a taste for it? Maybe that first sip wasn’t so bad after all, despite his rather dramatic reaction. Or perhaps whisky is simply a welcome distraction from all the bizarre events he’s caught up in.
Digger and Ganesh

From rum fan to whisky drinker?

For whisky lovers, it’s certainly a fun scene to look out for, especially given how pointedly it plays on the contrast between rum and whisky. Unfortunately, the scene doesn’t reveal exactly which whisky Digger pours. But the brand isn’t really the point. It’s all about the humour and Ganesh’s unexpected reaction.
And let’s be honest: how many whisky lovers started out with a first sip that didn’t quite win them over?
