In recent years,
Finland’s
Teerenpeli Distillery has firmly put itself on the map, gaining serious momentum on the international stage. With the Kulo 7 Years, the distillery turns the spotlight on sherry casks: a choice that’s already earned multiple awards. But how does this Finnish single malt taste?
Teerenpeli has been making steady international strides for years and with clear results. Its sherry-matured Kulo single malt, for instance, has picked up multiple gold medals, including a 98-point score at the International Wine & Spirits Competition 2020.
Kulo 7 Years is a seven-year-old single malt matured entirely in ex-sherry casks. It’s non-chill filtered and bottled without added color, at 50.7% ABV. With this single malt, Teerenpeli leans into a popular, full-throttle style where cask influence takes center stage.

A distinctive bottle with the little bird
The Teerenpeli Kulo fits seamlessly into the distillery’s wider range in terms of design. The 50-centiliter bottle is one of two sizes available (the other is 70 centiliters). Both share the same shape: broad-shouldered, with a solid profile and a flat top where the neck begins.
The neck itself is fairly short and capped with a handsome wooden stopper bearing the distillery’s logo: a capercaillie. This bird is common in Finland and is a protected species. The distillery’s name also comes from it: Teerenpeli loosely translates to “game of the capercaillie.”
The whisky in the bottle has nothing to do with the bird, though. Kulo is Finnish for controlled burning, a practice used in agriculture to enrich the soil. It’s applied, among other places, on fields where Teerenpeli sources ingredients for its spirit. Whether that influence shows up in the whisky can only be discovered one way: time to taste.
A ‘young’ whisky with a grown-up character
At seven years old, Teerenpeli Kulo is still relatively young. Yet this single malt immediately shows its hand and it’s anything but youthful in character. The nose delivers powerful sherry notes with plenty of raisins and dried fruits. Sweet hints of caramel and fig are lifted by lightly toasted oak.
Given its fairly high alcohol by volume (ABV), we add a few drops of water. This teases out fresher notes such as grapefruit and a spice element reminiscent of nutmeg. The whisky’s bold sherry character remains present even after dilution.
Dry and firm on the palate
On the tongue, the whisky opens fairly dry with a firm oak grip. It starts with a gentle tingle that quickly evokes berries, slightly underripe fruit with a touch of nuttiness. That soon gives way to concentrated forest-fruit notes that grow sweeter and fuller. A hint of citrus appears, and a flicker of licorice shows itself just before the finish sets in.
The finish is where this whisky truly stands out. It opens relatively soft, then turns noticeably drier. Oak, spice, and molten chocolate emerge as the flavor edges more toward bittersweet. The berry notes fade gradually into the aftertaste.
Conclusion: Teerenpeli Kulo 7 Years Review
Teerenpeli Kulo 7 Years is a powerful, characterful whisky with a pronounced sherry profile. The nose and palate are rich and layered, while the dry finish clearly showcases the sherry casks. It’s a compelling choice for both newcomers and seasoned drinkers, though perhaps less so for peat lovers.
+ Wonderfully layered flavor
+ Surprisingly long finish
- Perhaps not ideal for smoke lovers
