When choosing a summer vacation destination, there are several countries that find their way to the top of the typical vacation list. When thinking of sun, Spain, Greece or Turkey come to mind. While that is certainly not a bad idea after a year of hard work, neither is shaking things up a bit. And Scotland is the ideal destination for that this summer.

Feast Your Eyes in the Highlands

Many know Scotland as a rather cool land with lots of rain. Climate-wise, it's fairly similar to the Netherlands. That's true, but just as the Netherlands in summer is neither cold nor wet, so it is with Scotland. You can actually enjoy a moderate climate with a bit of sunshine, without being compelled to seek shade at noon.
While you serenely breathe in the fresh air outside, the Scottish landscape will delight your eyes and other senses. The Highlands are indeed a unique and beautiful region to visit, filled with continuous stretches of nature with imposing hills and inky rock formations perfect for hiking, and laden with fresh air. The freedom to move around is also a given, as opposed to being squashed side by side on a beach.
You might occasionally encounter some Scottish Highland cattle - or the locals - and that’s about it.
Besides, the Highlands and other regions of Scotland are filled with whisky distilleries. The perfect opportunity to visit one or more, and fully immerse yourself in the art of making aqua vitae. Whether you do it in Cairngorms National Park or the rugged Isle of Islay, it's a unique experience every whisky lover must experience at least once.

From Nature to Culture

Alongside its endless, unspoiled nature, Scotland also hosts several beautiful cities worth visiting. Glasgow is perhaps one of Europe's lesser-known gems, boasting plenty of Victorian architecture and Art Nouveau. For culture enthusiasts, the national opera, ballet and theatre also reside here.
When discussing culture, we must, of course, mention Edinburgh, Scotland’s best-known city by far. The city is steeped in history and culture, including the impressive and beautiful Edinburgh Castle, which you won't want to miss. If a splendid city view is desired, head to Arthur’s Seat - a mountain peak on the edge of the old city.
For environmentally conscious travellers, Scotland is also an excellent destination. Instead of flying to distant lands, you could instead sail across the North Sea. From IJmuiden, a trip to Newcastle, followed by a short drive (on the left-hand side of the road!), gets you to the Scottish border.
So, if you’re looking to experience something beyond the standard vacations favored by the average Dutchperson, Scotland is an incredible choice. You can enjoy nature, culture, sun and even a nice glass of whiskey. And if you occasionally wish to take a refreshing dip, that’s also doable in one of the many Lochs that the land is blessed with.
Just watch out for Nessie.
