There are many independent bottlers, think Gordon & MacPhail (founded in 1895), Douglas Laing, Signatory, and many others, who play a key role in the whisky world by releasing innovative bottlings that broaden the landscape. Single malts whose owners choose not to release them under their own label also get a chance to shine through these independents.

Why distilleries don’t bottle everything themselves

That last point gives us whisky lovers something to think about. Why would the owner of a single malt decide not to bottle it under their own label? Perhaps the character of that single cask or batch strays too far from the brand’s established image and flavor profile, the reputation they’ve built over many years.
There’s a lively trade in casks already filled by distilleries, while independent bottlers are also keen to buy new-make spirit and mature it under their own supervision.

The history of Cadenhead’s

In 1842, wine merchant and bottler William Cadenhead founded the company in Aberdeen, building a strong reputation over decades.
When the economy faltered in the 1960s and ’70s, the owners (J. & A. Mitchell & Co.) of the highly successful Springbank Distillery stepped in and saved the Cadenhead brand from collapse through an acquisition.
That move tightened the bond with Campbeltown, home to Springbank. Today, Cadenhead’s maturation and bottling take place in this former Whisky Capital.

Cadenhead’s most notable series

Over the years, this highly respected independent bottler has launched several popular ranges:
  • Authentic Collection, exclusively bottled at cask strength.
  • Enigma Series, featuring unusual and sometimes deliberately contradictory expressions.
  • Small Batch series, discontinued in 2020 but still much loved by enthusiasts and collectors.
  • Original Collection, the successor to Small Batch, almost always bottled at 46%.

More than just single malt whisky

Beyond single malts, Cadenhead also releases its own blended whiskies from Scotland, and even from, for example, Swedish or Indian distilleries. Thanks to their long-standing connection with the Springbank Distillery, they never have to worry about a shortage of casks or new-make spirit.
