For our weekly segment, 'Whisky Names Explained', we head this time to Thurso and the Wolfburn distillery. Wolfburn is the northernmost distillery on the mainland of Scotland, located in the town of Thurso, in the county of Caithness. The distillery was founded in 1821 but ceased production in 1860, reopening in 2013 with the same name.

Something with Vikings

The County of Caithness boasts a rich history; various peoples who settled in this area were Celts, Picts, and Norsemen. This latter group arrived around the 10th century from Western Norway in their iconic Viking ships, or as they call them, Langskip (longships), to Thurso.
A Langskip was a specialized Scandinavian warship that the Norsemen (widely known as Vikings) used for trade, exploration, and warfare during the Viking Age. Many features of a Langskip were adopted by other cultures, such as the Anglo-Saxons. The Vikings have influenced shipbuilding for centuries.

Wolfburn Langskip Name is No Accident

There's a reason Wolfburn named one of their whiskies after these ships, as the 'longships' were characterized as sleek, smooth, determined, and strong. And strong, Wolfburn Langskip certainly is.

What do we know about the whisky itself?

Wolfburn Langskip is a sweet and easily drinkable whisky despite its relatively high alcohol content of 58%. It's completely matured in first-fill bourbon casks and is non-chill filtered before bottling. The whisky also presents a natural color.
According to the tasting notes, the whisky has a rich taste and ample depth. The scent is fruity and floral and complemented by apple, oak, raisins, and fruitcake. The taste opens intensely, followed by an array of sweetness.
  • Nose: Demerara sugar, gingerbread, floral, white pepper, and candied almonds.
  • Palate: Dried fruit, sultana, and apricot. Nutty with walnut and macadamia. A hefty dose of nutmeg and stem ginger gives it some spice.
  • Finish: toffee, sweetness of apple and black pepper.
