Masataka Taketsuru, who lived from the late 19th century to the late 1970s, hailed as “the Father of Japanese Whisky,” must be feeling like Shibuya’s Hachikō right now, again. Taketsuru is being honored in the newest five-part Taketsuru Essentials Series of Nikka Whisky. The labels for the new whisky popped up in the TTB database.
The founder of Nikka Whisky, Taketsuru, established the company in 1934. It’s no surprise that his name appears on whisky labels from time to time, such as the Taketsuru Pure Malt range from the 2000s. Soon, Taketsuru will return to a label once more, this time on a new Japanese whisky series planned by Nikka.

A landmark for 1930s Japanese distiller

Taketsuru founded Nikka Whisky in 1934, and occasionally gets his name etched on whisky labels, such as the Taketsuru Pure Malt range from the 2000s.
This time another beverage will be bearing his name: the newest five-part Taketsuru Essentials Series of the Japanese distillery. The Essentials Series is going to be available for a limited-time only, recollecting five expressions that spring from the Taketsuru Pure Malt itself.
The first in the series highlights traditional coal-fired distillation at Nikka Whisky’s birthplace, the Yoichi Distillery, showcasing a savory depth and delicate harmony.
  • Nose: The subtlest aromas of mature casks with balanced malt harmony notes.
  • Palate: Full-bodied palate with malt sweetness and subtle peaty savory depth.
  • Finish: Lingering sweet finish with bittersweetness and elegant aftertaste.
When the whisky will be releases is not clear. Like always with a new label, distilleries can decide to not release the whisky in the end.

Who was Masataka Taketsuru?

Taketsuru deserves every bit of honor that he enjoys today. He traveled to Scotland, where he studied Scotch-making. There he studied at diverse distilleries and eventually took his learnings back to his beloved home country, which reverberated to the brand he founded.
His work also culminated in the founding of Hokkaido's Yoichi Distillery, and subsequently the Miyagikyo Distillery in Sendai. These two distilleries fervently supply the catalog of whiskies and more of the Nikka Whisky brand.
