Fired? In his latest film, this Hollywood star turns to whisky

Since yesterday, The End of Oak Street has been playing in theaters. The new film starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor starts out as a family drama, but quickly morphs into something entirely different. Heads up: if you love dinos, you’ll want to catch this one! Of course, we’re here to talk about a small cameo by the water of life.

The Platt family finds themselves in a bizarre, life-threatening situation when their quiet neighborhood is suddenly confronted with a prehistoric world.

Amid all the chaos, there’s a scene that instantly set off our whisky radar. At one point, dad Greg, played by McGregor, heads down to the basement. Is he looking for a safe hideout or going for a snack? Nope.

He goes for a whisky.

It quickly becomes clear that this isn’t a one-off impulse. Greg is really struggling mentally. A few weeks earlier, he lost his job. Since then, he’s been picking up odd gigs to make ends meet, including delivering pizzas.

And he’s ashamed of it.

Losing his job has dented his confidence and is causing tension at home. Greg tries to take the edge off that stress in his own way: with whisky.

Later, his wife (played by Anne Hathaway) confronts him about it. She smells whisky on him, and Greg doesn’t deny he’s been drinking. Their exchange makes it clear this has been happening more often.

In The End of Oak Street, whisky takes on a pretty dark role. The water of life isn’t sipped in a quiet moment of enjoyment. For Greg, whisky is an escape. He drinks to push his stress, shame, and sense of failure into the background for a while.

While the world outside is literally falling apart, Greg retreats for a moment into something familiar. That bottle won’t solve anything, of course, but it seems to give him a few minutes where his problems feel a little farther away.

It’s especially cool that it’s Ewan McGregor reaching for the whisky. Did you know the actor was born in Scotland and actually has a real connection to whisky off-screen as well? How could he not?

In 1998, McGregor was involved in the opening of the Lochranza Distillery on the Scottish Isle of Arran. He was gifted his own sherry hogshead there, filled with the distillery’s spirit.

That cask lay maturing for a full 26 years.

In 2024, 150 bottles were drawn from it and released under the name Ewan’s Cut. The bottles were then auctioned for charity, with proceeds going to Children’s Hospices Across Scotland.

So yes, McGregor and whisky go hand in glove.

The key question about the film remains unanswered: which whisky is Greg drinking in the basement?
