The eclipse has come and gone, a real spectacle that kept us captivated for a good half hour. Douglas Laing has added a striking new whisky to The Gauldrons range, one that lets you savor the solar eclipse a little longer. This is The Gauldrons Eclipse whisky!

For some, the past week revolved entirely around the moon slipping in front of the sun. It was a particularly big deal in Spain, where the eclipse was total. To mark the occasion, Douglas Laing has bottled a special whisky made entirely from single cask single malts from Campbeltown. What really sets this release apart, though, is the finish: for the first time, The Gauldrons has been finished in Orange Wine casks from Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia.

From Campbeltown to Southern Spain

The Gauldrons is typically known for its maritime Campbeltown character. The name literally means “bay of storms,” a nod to Campbeltown’s rugged location on Scotland’s west coast. With Eclipse, Douglas Laing stirs in a bold Spanish twist.

The whisky is built from single cask single malts from Campbeltown and then finished in Orange Wine casks sourced from the historic cellars of Jerez de la Frontera. According to Douglas Laing, this is the first time The Gauldrons has been finished in this way.

The result is an intriguing combination. Campbeltown’s familiar malty, coastal core gains extra fruity, citrusy, and spicy nuances from the Spanish wine casks.

How does The Gauldrons Eclipse taste?

The official tasting notes are as follows:

Nose: Malt, dried apricot, orange peel, and toasted almonds.
Palate: Walnuts, honey, ginger, and stone fruit.
Finish: Lingering spice, fresh orange, and nutty notes, with what Douglas Laing describes as an almost otherworldly edge.

Douglas Laing has bottled the whisky at 52.9 percent alcohol by volume (ABV). It’s also a strictly limited release of just 3,000 bottles worldwide.
