In the cabinets of collectors you’ll often spot rows of bottles with distinctive orange, red, or green labels. These are unmistakably bottles from the Springbank distillery. This artisanal maker of the water of life is celebrated by many enthusiasts across the whisky world. Whether all the praise is justified, you’ll discover in this Springbank 10 Years review.
That Springbank produces excellent whiskies with diverse flavor profiles is almost taken for granted. It’s as if lovers of uisge beatha see it as the most normal thing in the world. But what’s the secret to this success? Perhaps the handcrafted production process can give us a clue.
At Springbank, every step of the production process is carried out in-house and on-site. Whether it’s growing grain or floor malting, the Springbank team guards each phase of traditional whisky making like a lioness protects her cubs. Ultimately, the success of this Campbeltown malt also hinges on selecting the very best casks.

Springbank, Hazelburn, Longrow

Naturally, Springbank whisky is made at Springbank. But it’s not the only brand the distillery releases. Hazelburn and Longrow are the other members of the Springbank family. Today we’re taking a closer look at Springbank’s ten-year-old single malt.

Cutting back on packaging, not on flavor

The packaging of this ten-year-old Springbank can best be described as minimalist. The clean black-and-orange label on the bottle contains only the essentials. The whisky is non-chill filtered and uncolored, and it’s bottled at 46% alcohol by volume (ABV). From a marketing perspective, you won’t find the costs reflected in the design.
This Springbank matured in 60% ex-bourbon and 40% ex-sherry casks. On the nose, the influence of both types is obvious. Milk chocolate, cornflakes, and heather honey make for an inviting first impression, joined by hints of mango, red apples, and caramel. Threaded through the layers is a pleasing amount of gentle peat smoke.

Complex right through to the finish

On the palate, the smoke stays in the background while the earthy character of peat remains evident. The spiciness you expect from sherry casks finds its way across the tongue. Nutmeg and cinnamon form the backbone, with vanilla, toffee, and especially grain-driven notes rounding out the profile without overpowering it.
As the flavors gradually fade, the finish holds onto its maritime character with a wisp of peat smoke. The finish is medium in length and, unlike the nose and palate, a touch straightforward. We say goodbye to the last sip with honey and lemon cake.

Conclusion: Springbank 10 Years Review

This artisanal whisky breathes quality. The presentation is pared back, but for fans of a clean label, that’s no issue. For a ten-year-old single malt, both the nose and palate are impressively complex.
Balance, as with many things, is the magic word. There’s sweetness, fruit, grain, and a hint of smoke to discover. That makes this whisky appealing to a wide audience.
It’s a pity that the party in the nose and on the palate ends with a slight dip. Still, it doesn’t spoil the fun—this is a glorious dram, no two ways about it!
+ Rich nose, complex palate
+ Beautifully balanced, broad appeal
+ Few ten-year-old whiskies pack this much flavor
- The presentation is very basic
- The finish is a bit simple compared to the beautiful nose and palate
