A wave of new series and even films, set in Middle-earth is on the way, and there’s something tasty for whisky lovers too. You can literally taste the terroir of Middle-earth with this brand-new The Lord of the Rings whisky: Ringbearer.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the legendary film trilogy, an official single malt whisky is being released straight from New Zealand. A whisky with the terroir of Middle-earth

It’s no coincidence this whisky hails from New Zealand. The original Lord of the Rings films were shot there under the direction of New Zealand filmmaker Peter Jackson. The country became inseparably linked with Middle-earth, from its sweeping landscapes to its iconic filming locations.

For this anniversary release, they sought a whisky maker who could quite literally bottle the terroir of Middle-earth. They found it in Pokeno Distillery. The distillery sits in the Waikato, in a valley at the foot of the volcanic Bombay Hills. They’ve been crafting New Zealand single malt whisky there for about a decade.

For this special The Lord of the Rings: Ringbearer whisky, the distillery took a different approach than usual.

Four distinct casks come together

Ringbearer isn’t drawn from a single cask. It’s a composition of four different cask types. They are:

Virgin American oak casks
First-fill American oak casks
Muscat wine casks
Manuka honey casks, specially seasoned by a local honey producer

Manuka honey is deeply tied to New Zealand and, according to the makers, lends the whisky a distinctly sweet character. Combined with Muscat wine casks and American oak, it promises a whisky that diverges significantly from traditional Scotch single malt.

What does The Lord of the Rings Ringbearer whisky taste like?

The producer has shared detailed tasting notes. The whisky opens with creamy vanilla and butterscotch, layered with sweet Manuka honey and pear.

Here are the full tasting notes:

Nose: creamy vanilla, butterscotch, sweet Manuka honey, and pear.
Palate: rich caramel tones, intertwined with the sweetness from the Muscat wine casks.
Finish: sweet and indulgent, with Manuka honey clearly in the spotlight.

The whisky is bottled at 46 percent alcohol by volume (ABV).
