Glenmorangie 13YO Moscatel Cask whisky
The Scottish distillery Glenmorangie has released a whisky that’s exceptional even by their standards: a 13-year-old single malt built entirely around Moscatel casks.
What makes this release truly special is that it’s an experiment that will never be repeated. It’s exclusive to members of The Whisky Club in Australia and New Zealand and won’t receive a global release.
Distilled in 2009, the whisky comes from a small, previously hidden parcel of casks. For this project, master distiller Dr Bill Lumsden selected Moscatel dessert wine casks—the first time such casks filled at Glenmorangie have been used.

A secret experiment

It began as a pilot program designed to deepen the recipe for Nectar d’Or, the expression now known as The Nectar 16 Year Old.
After a secondary maturation of 7 years in Moscatel casks, the result is a whisky with the majority of its liquid just shy of 16 years old. Still, the label intentionally states 13 years, reflecting the youngest whisky used.

How does Glenmorangie 13 Year Old Moscatel Cask taste?

Bottled at 48.2% ABV, it delivers a dessert-like profile. Expect aromas and flavors of strawberries and cream, chocolate orange, vanilla custard, baked apples, dark spices, and delicate floral notes. It’s a combination that nods to Moscatel’s sweet, syrupy character, with clear influences of French oak.
Dr Bill Lumsden underscores the exclusivity of this whisky:
'I’m not doing anything like this again because obviously we’re giving this to you with this guarantee of exclusivity.'
- Dr Bill Lumsden

Where can you buy Glenmorangie 13 Year Old Moscatel Cask?

Glenmorangie 13 Year Old Moscatel Cask is available from 9 January to members of The Whisky Club for 150 Australian dollars, roughly €86. A European or global release is not planned.
According to The Whisky Club, this is exactly what their releases are all about
'It’s an absolute honour to work with Dr Bill and the Glenmorangie team for this release. A Whisky Club release gives the world’s best whiskymakers the chance to create something unprecedented. It’s these hidden parcels of casks, personal projects or superlative barrel selections that become club releases.“This is a whisky that will remind long-time whisky drinkers why they fell in love with Glenmorangie and deliver newcomers a truly unrepeatable single malt.'

- Seamus Carroll, general manager of The Whisky Club
