Lovers of cask-influence pay attention: The
GlenAllachie has launched a new long-aged release which is heavily influenced by the cask it aged in. The distillery has released a 1990 vintage, 35-year old single malt, bottled at cask strength. It unites four types of casks, with Mizunara oak taking a leading role in the formation of the profile of the whisky.
Four-cask Mizunara oak-led
This new
The GlenAllachie release is composed of a combination of Mizunara virgin oak, American virgin oak, Oloroso sherry, and Pedro Ximénez casks. Mizunara oak is not very common and it is hard to work with. It is extracted using Japanese oak trees and is commonly linked to such notes as coconut, incense, and soft spice.
Here it lies in the centre of the whisky, sustained by the more substantial, sweeter action of the sherry casks and the framework of the American oak.
What the distillery had to say
Master blender Billy Walker said the release was a culmination of his years of experience in whisky making.
'This 35-year-old is a reflection of all that I have studied during the past 50 years masterful cask choice and management, patience, and sensory instinct.'
- Billy WalkerHe also mentioned the difficulty of mixing these casks, in particular Mizunara, that needs to be handled with care to achieve the right balance.
How does GlenAllachie 35 Year Old taste?
- Nose: Mocha, cinnamon, and treacle, overlaid with cocoa, toasted nuts, pineapple, and honey.
- Palate: Rich and complex, with chocolate, baking spices, coconut, orchard fruits and a hint of sandalwood.
- Finish: Long and warming with lingering sweetness, spice and soft oak.
A presentation inspired by Japanese craft
The packaging is Mizunara influenced. The bottle is placed in a wooden case that was inspired by Kumiko, a traditional Japanese style of woodworking.
The design incorporates elaborate patterns with no nails and this reflects the accuracy of the whisky itself. The four casks in which the whisky is made are represented by each side of the box.
A long-aged release with a clear direction
The Whisky is bottled at 50.2% ABV, containing no chill filtration and natural colour.
It is priced at approximately 2,025 Dollars (1,512 Pounds), which is certainly in the premium segment. It is currently sold at the distillery and in select retailers, and more will be available in the near future.
In the case of GlenAllachie, this release seems to be a declarative assertion of its emphasis on cask-driven whisky, particularly in the hands of Billy Walker.
