What happens to whisky when you expose it to crushing pressure, total darkness, and icy cold? That’s the very question behind Domhayn’s '1000 Fathoms Deep' project. The whisky maker plans to lower a cask on a cable to the ocean floor to mature there… if the cask doesn’t implode.
At a depth of 1,830 meters (6,003 ft), Domhayn wants to mature a spirit-filled oak cask on the seabed. The goal is to see whether the casks can withstand the pressure, and how the cold, the pressure, and the ocean’s influence transform the whisky.
Why age whisky underwater?
Traditionally, whisky matures for years in wooden casks on land. Factors like temperature, humidity, and the type of wood shape its flavor. But far beneath the surface, the rules change completely. The immense pressure at that depth, over 180 times the air pressure at sea level, could trigger a one-of-a-kind interaction between the wood and the whisky. This experiment is about that change and what it could do to the flavor of the whisky.
Experts suspect these conditions might accelerate maturation or unlock entirely new flavor profiles. Think richer oak tones, deeper complexity, and perhaps even aromas you’d never encounter otherwise.
A Kickstarter that could make whisky history
The team behind
Domhayn calls the project “a voyage into the abyss.” By sending a cask into the depths, they aim to discover how extreme conditions shape whisky’s character. If the experiment succeeds, it could spark a whole new revolution in whisky maturation.
Beyond the science, exclusivity plays a major role. The whisky born from this experiment will be extraordinarily scarce. For enthusiasts and collectors, it’s a rare chance to hold a piece of history.
To bring the project to life, funding is needed and a
Kickstarter has been launched. It goes live on May 13, and you can already sign up. Rewards for backers are being billed as “rare collectibles,” making this project appealing not only to whisky fans, but also to investors seeking unique and valuable bottles.
