What whisky do you serve when a fabulous dinner awaits? Could it be a bottle from The
GlenAllachie? At the very least, we aim to give you food for thought with this review of The GlenAllachie 12 Year.
Billy Walker's success story is well known by now. He started as a chemist at Ballantine’s, but later influenced major brands like Deanston, Tobermory, Bunnahabhain, and Benriach. With many years of experience in the
Scottish whisky industry under his belt, he took over the then little known GlenAllachie Distillery in 2017.
The Impact of Billy Walker on Whisky
The company had been around for a while and had huge stocks of whisky primarily used in blends. It’s an art to craft the perfect blend from these stocks, an art at which Billy Walker excels! A case in point is the 12-year-old GlenAllachie, which got a makeover with a brand new purple label in 2024.
From the Heart of Speyside
GlenAllachie loosely translates as "Valley of Stones". The relatively young and modern GlenAllachie Distillery sits in a vast estate nestled at the foot of the Ben Rinnes mountain, right in the heart of Speyside. A stream coming off the famous Scottish mountain supplies the distillery with the water it needs.
The whole distillery complex was built in 1967 and includes several large warehouses accommodating as many as 50,000 barrels. The distillery possesses four stills with an annual capacity of four million liters of whisky. However, since Billy Walker came on board, GlenAllachie distillery has prioritized quality over quantity, distilling just 800,000 liters each year, all of superior quality.

Purple Haze
The bottle, with its purple box and purple label, has a contemporary and tasteful design. With the range of whiskies currently on the market, the styling of the bottle is very important. The bottle should immediately catch the eye on the shelf.
The 12 years of aging in Oloroso and PX casks have given the whisky a beautiful amber glow. The nose has a delightful sweetness, with raisins, caramel, and a hint of cinnamon.
The flavor aligns perfectly and introduces marzipan and additional dried fruits. This is without a doubt a top-shelf whisky, although for some it may be a tad too sweet. The finish is long and intense, with clear sherry influences and a subtle spiciness.
In addition to the core range, featuring the 8-, 10-, 12-, 18-, and 25-year-old versions, there are now numerous special single cask versions of The GlenAllachie on the market. While these require a heftier wallet, they offer something truly remarkable to taste, bottled at cask strength.
Starting from the 18-year-old version, the price swiftly escalates, a trend seen with many whisky brands that label their bottles as premium from 18 years on, and attach a corresponding price tag.
Conclusion The GlenAllachie 12 Review
Billy Walker and his team consistently create high-quality whiskies at an affordable price, and this 12-year-old from the core range is another delightful example of that. Whisky enthusiasts, both novices and seasoned, will appreciate this whisky. Let's hope Billy continues to stir things up in Speyside; who knows what other distilleries he could elevate to a new level there?
