Travel for me often revolves around tasting, but not just in restaurants. A bar in an unfamiliar city can be just as much of an adventure as a local attraction. Each cocktail or whisky tells its own tale, making the discovery all the more exciting.

Bars as windows to the city

A bar is often more than a place to grab a drink. It's a reflection of the local culture. Sometimes chic and opulent, sometimes raw and simple. A bar somewhere else in the world often emanates a completely different vibe than in your own country.
What's more, bars are a gateway to meet people and taste flavors that you might otherwise never encounter. I've had the habit of seeking out whisky bars abroad for years, but in the past year, specifically cocktail bars have been added to my hunt. Of course, I'm always on the lookout for cocktails with whisky.

Atlas in Singapore

In May, we visited Singapore, where we stepped into the iconic Atlas Bar. Atlas is not without reason listed amongst the Top 50 best cocktail bars in the world: stepping in feels like entering a cathedral of spirits. Tall ceilings, endless racks full of gin and whisky, and bartenders crafting cocktails like they're pieces of art.
The Negroni that was served there for us had everything: balance, precision, and style. Yet it wasn't just the cocktail that impressed, but the overall experience. The architecture of the building alone made it feel as though we had walked right onto a movie set. It was an unforgettable experience.

The magic of Dubrovnik

Where Singapore exudes grandiose elegance, Dubrovnik offers charm and intimacy. There I found myself in a cave. The cocktail itself was not special, but the setting was. Later, I happened to drink something truly unique. A cocktail, beautifully garnished, served in a seashell, laced with Talisker.
This experience taught me that cocktails can surprise not only in taste, but also visually serve as a spectacle. Sometimes you almost feel guilty for drinking such a work of art. And the venue itself enhances the drink even further: a dramatic sea cave gives an entirely different atmosphere than a sleek city interior.

Whisky bars as world trips in themselves

Besides cocktail bars, whisky bars have their own magic. Whether it's a sleek Japanese bar where each drop is poured with ceremonial precision, or a Scottish pub where the bartender serves you a dram you wouldn't find elsewhere: whisky is a passport.
In each bar, you get introduced to the locale, but also to the passion of the people serving it. And the more you travel, the more you discover that whisky is not just a purely Scottish affair anymore. From Taiwan to Ireland – each bar adds a chapter to your own flavor journey.

More than just drinks

What all these experiences have in common is that it's never just about the alcohol. It's about the ambiance, the conversations, the moment when a city suddenly reveals a part of itself to you. In Singapore, that was grandeur and sophistication. In Dubrovnik, it was a decorative surprise and a cave.
Sometimes the most beautiful souvenir is not a photo, but a memory made with a whisky cocktail. OK, sure, you can indeed take a picture of that too!
