Speyside is known for elegant, gentle, and fruity whiskies.
Tomintoul fits that bill perfectly. It’s no coincidence the distillery’s whisky carries the nickname “The Gentle Dram.” The Tomintoul 10 Year Old is a single malt that focuses on drinkability and approachability, but does it sacrifice too much in the process? You’ll find out in this whisky review.
Tomintoul is a relatively young distillery, founded in 1964. Even so, production is fairly high, with millions of liters of new make spirit flowing from the stills each year. A portion of that spirit spends ten years maturing in ex-bourbon casks before being bottled as Tomintoul 10 Year Old.
Is this a textbook ex-bourbon whisky, or does the distillery’s soft character manage to surprise?

No bells and whistles
The tube the bottle comes in is predominantly white and captures the distillery’s charm. The top features a picturesque scene: the Ballantruan Spring, the water source for the distillery.
Aside from some text like the tasting notes and this image, the tube is free of bells and whistles. The bottle itself follows suit: simple, straightforward, and unfussy. It’s all about the whisky in the glass, so let’s pour one.
Soft and friendly in the glass
In the glass,
Tomintoul 10 Year Old looks bright and light in color. When you swirl it, the legs are quite thin, which hints at the light mouthfeel to come.
On the nose, the whisky is wonderfully fruity with notes of red apple, pear, sweet toffee, honey, and vanilla. There’s also a subtle oak note that adds just a touch more intrigue than fruit alone.
A little too gentle?
On the palate,
Tomintoul 10 Year Old is very much a gentle dram. It’s friendly and surprisingly subtle. Expect a flavor combination of grain, apple, oak spice, and a hint of baking spice with a light peppery tingle.
After rolling it around your mouth, the whisky doesn’t reveal deeper layers, no whisper of smoke, no extra deep and complex character, just a straightforward profile. Right through to the short finish, it stays pleasantly fruity with a mild spiciness. The first thing you taste is fruit, and that’s also the last note that lingers.
With its easygoing tone and soft flavor profile, this is an ideal whisky for newcomers. It doesn’t have a big, weighty body or a long finish, but it does offer a pleasing flavor that suits any moment.
