Queen Victoria herself paid the distillery a personal visit. It all sounds quite grand, but don’t let that put you off. Royal Lochnagar sits in the Cairngorms, not far from Balmoral Castle. That alone makes the distillery special, but the story gets even better when the British royal family steps into the picture.

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited the distillery in 1848. Soon after, Lochnagar was granted the right to add the word “Royal” to its name. The whisky gained a royal pedigree that still features prominently on the bottle today. Not a bad tale to share at the table when you pour a dram.

The charm of Royal Lochnagar 12 is that the name sounds far fancier than the whisky behaves. You get a 12-year-old Highland single malt with a royal backstory, without the spirit trying to be overly complex.
