The square bottle of
Johnnie Walker is not only iconic, but also recognizable. Did you know that the drink often shows up in Hollywood films? Sometimes the bottle is barely noticeable and you need to pay close attention, while at other times the bottle shamelessly comes to the table. We've picked five moments where Johnnie Walker Black Label managed to snag itself a cameo.
Blade Runner – Sci-fi noir with a whisky twist
Ridley Scott's Blade Runner set a visual standard for science fiction films in the 80s. Who hasn't seen Blade Runner with Harrison Ford? The film's aesthetic is recognizable: neon, rain, dark streets, and a glass of whisky.
That last part might have been forgotten. But Ford's connection to Glenmorangie these days isn't that strange. The man loves the drink of the gods and in Blade Runner he often sipped Johnnie Walker Black Label to wash away his moral dilemmas.
But it doesn't stop there. There's even a special and very limited bottle of Johnnie Walker: Black Label that was released. Its design: futuristic and angular, with a hefty nod to the dystopian world of the film.
Den of Thieves – A big whisky blunder
Not every Johnnie Walker moment in the film world is an Oscar-worthy cameo. In Den of Thieves, we see a scene where Black Label is poured, but it doesn't go smoothly. The bottle and the context simply don't match, resulting in a continuity error in the film. Oh well, you know the saying: a little mistake, no big deal.
The Killer’s Game – No medicine, but whisky
Sometimes whisky is used in films in ways that we absolutely do not recommend. In The Killer's Game, we see a character clean his pills down with a large swig of Johnnie Walker Black Label. Despite being spectacularly featured, it's utterly irresponsible in real life. Whisky is not to guzzle, but to savor!
Though we must admit, it works again. Johnnie Walker Black Label is just in the movie, managing to land yet another supporting role.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024) – Henry Cavill opts for Scottish whisky
In Guy Ritchie's war film The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, we see Henry Cavill as a muscle hunk with a preference for Johnnie Walker Black Label. While he could be drinking tea (it is a British setting after all), he chooses a glass of whisky.
Admit it, a hero who pours Johnnie Walker earns just a little bit more sympathy from us whisky lovers.
The Good German (2006) – Clooney and the recognizable square bottle
Johnnie Walker doesn't only appear in blockbusters or futuristic settings. In The Good German (starring George Clooney and Toby Maguire), we see the bottle in a classic black and white film guise.
Maguire hands over a bottle, clearly recognizable with its iconic square shape, wrapped in paper. For the attentive viewer, the bottle remains often
visible on Clooney’s desk. The bottle is featured quietly in this film, and sometimes that's just how you should enjoy a glass of whisky. Just silently and peacefully.
More movies featuring Johnnie Walker Black Label?
In short,Johnnie Walker Black Label may have never accepted an Oscar, but the whisky has stealthily built a notable CV of movie cameos. And probably many more than we mentioned here.
