Nestled in the heart of Speyside lies the charming town of Dufftown, and this edition of
Whisky Deals spotlights drams from one of the seven active distilleries in this beating heart of the whisky industry.
There were once more, but for now we’re focusing solely on distilleries that are still in operation. Just as Rome was built on seven hills, Dufftown can proudly say: we’re built on seven stills.
The Singleton of Dufftown 15 Year Old
The Dufftown distillery produces almost exclusively for the blended whisky industry. There’s no visitor centre, either. Production is carried out with great care: fermentation runs longer than usual, and distillation starts off slow. The result is a deeply smooth character after maturation in American and European oak casks.
Take a look at the bottle, inspired by the traditional hip flask. This is simply a delicious whisky.
Balvenie 12 DoubleWood
In picturesque Dufftown, nicknamed the Whisky Capital of Scotland, Balvenie is one of the seven active distilleries where tradition still reigns and where they even have their own cooperage. This whisky receives glowing reviews from many critics.
After at least 12 years in ex-bourbon barrels, it spends nine months in Oloroso sherry casks. Then the famed tuns work their magic, marrying the different casks together before bottling after roughly three months.
Mortlach 16
Nicknamed The Beast of Dufftown, this 16-year-old whisky is a highly regarded and exceptional creation from the Mortlach distillery. Enjoy a perfect balance of sweet and savoury dried fruits with a captivating finish. There are many independent bottlings, but this one is part of the core range and comes in a strikingly elegant bottle. The “beast” moniker speaks to its robust, meaty character, where you’ll find a pronounced bite.
