Just before Halloween, something special has been brought out of Bowmore’s whisky warehouses. The Scottish distillery is bringing back The Devil's Casks, a whisky series that became hugely popular with enthusiasts more than 10 years ago. But this revival comes with a remarkable story. Two whisky casks that had previously been used for The Devil's Casks whiskies have been put to work once again. Will these Bowmore whiskies give you goosebumps?
The Devil's Casks whisky originally appeared between 2013 and 2015. The series comprised three limited-edition bottlings known for their powerful sherry-cask influence. Think dark fruit, chocolate, treacle and spice, combined with Bowmore’s signature smokiness.
Over the years, the whiskies developed a distinctive reputation. Now Bowmore has decided to bring the series back to life. But not quite in the way you might expect from Bowmore. The distillery has given the series a surprising twist by using old whisky casks.

Old whisky casks finally find a purpose after all these years

For the new 22-year-old Bowmore, the distillery used two casks that had been set aside after The Devil's Casks whisky was bottled back then. They were never used and still contained maturing whisky. Rather than being bottled, the whisky was allowed to mature for around another 10 years.
The new Devil's Casks whisky was first matured in first-fill Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks before receiving a final finish in refill Oloroso casks. The result is a 22-year-old single malt whisky bottled at 59.6% ABV.
Detailed tasting notes have not yet been released, but according to the distillery, you can expect flavours including charred fruit, treacle, salty oak and liquorice.

A new Bowmore The Devil's Casks 10 Year Old is also arriving

Alongside the 22-year-old whisky, a new 10-year-old expression is being released. It is intended as a tribute to the original series. The whisky was matured in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks and then finished in first-fill Pedro Ximénez casks.
At 56.6% ABV, this is no lightweight whisky either. Official tasting notes are not yet available for this expression, but Bowmore mentions flavours of dark fruit, fruitcake, cocoa and maple syrup.

When will the new Bowmore whiskies be available?

The 10-year-old The Devil's Casks will be released on 16 October 2026 and sold exclusively through The Whisky Shop. The 10-year-old Bowmore has a recommended retail price of £70, equivalent to approximately €80. You will need to dig considerably deeper for the 22-year-old expression. It costs £380, or around €440.
Anyone hoping to secure the 22-year-old expression must first purchase the 10-year-old whisky. From 31 October, these buyers can enter a ballot for the older bottling. From 1 December, both whiskies will also be available at the Bowmore distillery on Islay.
And that may not be all. Bowmore has announced that this release marks the beginning of a larger project involving the re-release of well-known whiskies from its past.
