Tonight, the Netherlands and Japan face off in our country’s first World Cup match. What will our Orange Lions deliver? Will they cut Japan down to size, or will we be sent packing by the Land of the Rising Sun? One thing’s certain: both nations have a soft spot for whisky. So we’re staging a head-to-head on the whisky pitch. Which one gets your vote?
During the World Cup, it’s tempting to obsess over line-ups, form, and tactics, but don’t forget to look at your glass. What whisky are you sipping during the match?
In this temporary feature, every time the Dutch team plays, we’ll spotlight one Dutch dram alongside an international counterpart. Not every opponent makes whisky, of course, but we’ll always try to find a fitting match for the Dutch bottle. Today it’s Netherlands vs. Japan, with a Millstone squaring up against a Hibiki.

Netherlands: Millstone 100 Rye Whisky

We kick off with Millstone 100 Rye Whisky, a dram that makes its intentions clear from the first whistle. Crafted by Zuidam Distillers, one of the country’s most renowned distilleries, this isn’t just any whisky—it’s an award-winner with accolades from around the globe. Not a bad way to start a World Cup.
Millstone 100 Rye is made from 100% rye, which gives it its bold, spicy character. On the nose it bursts to life with citrus, spice, honey, vanilla, and oak. Think of Oranje winning the ball in the opening minutes and pinning the opposition back: bright, fierce, and full of energy.
On the palate, this Dutch whisky arrives with breadth and confidence. There’s fruity sweetness, along with honey, baking spices, and a clear influence of oak. The rye adds a gentle kick without throwing things off balance. The finish is long, warm, and peppery, with lingering notes of vanilla and oak.
Here’s hoping the Dutch squad tonight is like the finish on this Zuidam whisky: built to last. We’ll need to keep pushing beyond the 90th minute to bag those coveted three points.

Japan: Hibiki Japanese Harmony

On the Japanese side, we’ve lined up Hibiki Japanese Harmony, a whisky that’s almost the polar opposite of Millstone 100 Rye. Hibiki doesn’t win with brute force, but with technique, calm, and precision. It’s a blend of several Japanese whiskies that come together in a beautifully balanced whole.
That makes it a perfect fit for the Japanese team, whose players are tactically astute and crafty: an engine room that elevates balance and composure into an art form.
On the nose, Hibiki is floral and refined, with notes of rose, lychee, rosemary, mature wood, and sandalwood. On the palate, it’s soft and elegant. Honey, candied orange peel, and white chocolate create a rounded, almost silky character. The finish is subtle and lingering, with a delicate touch of Mizunara oak. Nothing is overdone, nothing out of place. It’s all about harmony, just like the Japanese side.

The match in the glass

Millstone and Hibiki turn Netherlands–Japan into a duel of intensity versus elegance. The Netherlands brings rye, pepper, oak, and power. Japan answers with flowers, fruit, honey, and finesse. Millstone is the team that jolts the stadium awake. Hibiki is the team that silences the crowd with one perfect move.
The question is which style will prevail on Sunday night. Will Dutch energy and attacking bravado translate into a goal or two? Or will a lack of finishing see Japan’s calm, discipline, and technical balance carry the day?
