If you follow Teeling on social media, you've undoubtedly seen Adam Wall (29) pass by. And you wouldn't have missed his infectious enthusiasm about whisk(e)y cocktails. Adam is the Distillery Brand Ambassador for Teeling, and we recently put him on the spot in Dublin.
This interview was published previously on the Dutch version of Whisky Monkeys.

A beer as a vacation

Adam has been with Teeling for about 3.5 years, and when we ask him how much he enjoys his job, his eyes light up. ‘I love my job!’ The way he says love adds the perfect garnish to a cocktail. All kidding aside: Adam loves whiskey and whiskey cocktails, having been a bartender for many years before joining Teeling.
This has led to him being perpetually "on".
‘I prefer to drink my whiskies straight at first. But that's due to my background as a bartender. I'm always trying to figure out which flavors work best in a cocktail. After drinking it straight, I drink a neat whiskey, then diluted with a bit of water, then with a bit of ice. This way, I'm constantly discovering flavors. Then I know: this works well in a cocktail.'
When he drinks a beer – he laughs boisterously – that's when he's officially on vacation.

Mom shares TikTok videos

His mind is essentially on whisk(e)y-cocktail-terms 24/7. 'I love coming up with new cocktails for the brand (Teeling, ed.).' Besides giving daily tours at the distillery, Adam regularly creates videos for Teeling that make their way onto social media, including TikTok. 'That's cool, but also so embarrassing...'

His laughter is hearty, but there is a hint of embarrassment. 'My mom posts everything on Facebook.' Consequently, he runs into people who jokingly say: 'I'm so tired of seeing your face on my screen!' Even though they are simply teasing, Adam genuinely enjoys the attention and is proud to be the face of Teeling distillery.

Teeling's growth has surged exponentially

What he finds thrilling is witnessing the leaps and bounds Teeling, the Irish whiskey distillery, has made in such a short period. ‘I started and one month in the lockdown hit. This meant we had to kind of start all over again.’ Now, they are conducting tours for about thirty people every half hour. The global interest in Teeling has surged significantly. This growth is something Adam is thrilled to witness.
'Two days ago we had about 700 visitors! That's amazing to see.'
Amongst the masses, some celebs sometimes find their way in. Without naming any names, a government official has visited, as has the national rugby team. There's also one person who stands out in Adam's memory. 'The voice actress of Elsa from Frozen (Idina Menzel, ed.) She came in with her husband.'

The heyday of Irish whiskey

Adam exudes the fact that he's enjoying himself immensely at Teeling. Whisky Monkeys was given a private tour where right from the outset, he enthusiastically spoke about the early developments of whiskey in Ireland. When we asked what era he would like to have been born in if not now, he didn't have to think long.
'The heyday back then. When we made sixty percent of the world's whiskies. I would love to visit those grand distilleries that no longer exist. That would be cool.'

Beautiful whisk(e)y memories

For now, he's making the best of the present. And that's more than fine. Because people are excited about Teeling, allowing Adam to create cherished memories. For example, on one of his birthdays, he drank a 21-year-old Teeling with his girlfriend and both their parents.
'We were all sitting together, savouring the whiskey, and it was really cool. I could introduce them to a premium whiskey, real quality with an age statement. And now, they understand why it costs so much.'
They were drinking the Teeling Renaissance Series No. 2 18Y Australian Shiraz Cask Finish.
He also has a fond memory from work when he was allowed to serve whiskey on a short cruise trip. Adam loves to travel and hopes that eventually, he could follow in the footsteps of two of his colleagues who often travel the world. This way he can not only see more of the world but also educate more people on Teeling.

Cocktail tips

In terms of imparting knowledge, he has a cocktail tip: 'Know your drinks and ingredients. Don’t be scared to try new things. Don't think about: this can't be, it needs to be more masculine. Calmly try fruity cocktails. Just try everything. And know when to shake and when to stir. Shake your cocktails if you have Citrus, protein, or cream-like substances.' In other scenarios, you should definitely not do it. Other than that, everyone should enjoy their whisk(e)y in whatever way they like.
Favorite whiskey: Killbegan or Bushmills Black Bush
Number of whiskey glasses per week: 5-6 (but not full glasses)
Favorite whiskey bottle in possession: Teeling 30 years
