That the whisky world is under pressure has been clear for some time. That pressure is now reaching the bigger players, too. Diageo has announced the start of a major global restructuring. The drinks giant behind Johnnie Walker and other Scotch whiskies is making significant changes.
Like many whisky and spirits producers, the distilleries under Diageo are currently navigating a challenging period. As a result, changes are needed to make the company more competitive. That transformation is now underway.
The reorganization at Diageo is being led by Dave Lewis, the company’s current CEO. And he opened with some bold announcements.
Headcount will be reduced. Barry O’Sullivan, managing director for the United Kingdom, is leaving the company. He will be succeeded by Marc Woodward, who currently leads Unilever’s operations in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Cutting costs to make the whisky giant competitive again

Unfortunately, he won’t be the only one affected, as personnel costs will be trimmed across all departments. What exactly will happen isn’t yet clear. Diageo will first inform its employees. Only then will the company share the changes publicly.
More details on the new strategy are expected on 6 August 2026, when Diageo will also present its full-year results for fiscal 2026.

Changes also coming for Diageo’s international whisky operations

Diageo is also reshaping its leadership beyond the UK. John O’Keeffe has been appointed president and CEO of Diageo North America, succeeding Sally Grimes. O’Keeffe previously oversaw Asia Pacific and global travel retail.
The restructuring aligns with a strategic shift already announced. Back in February, Diageo stated it would redesign its operating model. The goal is to create sustainable shareholder value and position the company more strongly in a challenging market.
Of and what Diageo is planning in terms of restructuring is not entirely clear. Also it is not yet clear how many jobs will be lost.
