The Indian single malt Indri lays to rest the idea that high-quality single malts only come from Scotland. According to parent company Piccadily Agro Industries Limited, international blind tastings and prestigious awards have proven that India is a serious contender in the premium segment.

With just over two million bottles sold in 2024, Indri claims to be India’s best-selling single malt and the fastest-growing Indian single malt worldwide. Of that total, 124,000 cases were sold domestically and 46,000 cases were exported.

According to the brand, blind tastings have played a crucial role in breaking the traditional bias toward Scotch. Without a label or origin to guide them, drinkers let the whisky’s quality speak for itself. With that, Indri stakes its claim as a true rival to established Scottish names in the premium space.

Master Blender Surrinder Kumar emphasizes that maturation sits at the heart of the brand’s DNA. The team works with ex-bourbon barrels, French wine casks, sherry casks, and various types of oak. According to Kumar, these casks aren’t marketing gimmicks, but tools to shape the whisky’s flavor, texture, and balance.

To enhance transparency and the brand experience, Piccadily has opened a modern visitor center at the distillery in Indri, Haryana. Guests can take guided tours and enjoy tastings.

Sharma, who oversees marketing, says he’s seeing a shift. Consumers are relying less solely on price when making purchase decisions. Curiosity, international accolades, and a window into the production process are increasingly taking the lead.

Despite the recent trade agreement between India and the United Kingdom, which will likely lower import duties on Scotch, Indri remains confident. The brand is pursuing a dual growth strategy, including expansion across Europeand it’s not shy about its global ambitions.
