Berry jam, chocolate, and cappuccino. You’ll find all of these in the flavor profile of Tomintoul Tawny Port Cask whisky. Welcome to this review, where we take you on a sweet journey.
Robert Fleming has served as master distiller at the Tomintoul Distillery for years. When someone has worked somewhere for over 30 years, it speaks to more than just dedication and passion: it speaks to consistency. Tomintoul Distillery has been delivering quality for ages when it comes to the water of life. Today, we’re exploring the Tomintoul Tawny Port Cask whisky.

What is Tawny Port?

A Tawny Port Cask means this whisky has matured in a Tawny Port barrel. Port is a fortified wine from Portugal, essentially wine at its core, but with fermentation briefly interrupted to add spirits. A Tawny, in turn, must age for three years in wooden casks. Thanks to this extended maturation, it’s softer on the palate than, for example, Ruby Port.
You get the idea: finishing in this cask has given the whisky an exceptionally gentle flavor profile. It’s no coincidence that Jordan Hillman, sales manager at Angus Dundee Distillers and a member of the family, once described the whisky as a “ladies’ whisky.”

Holding the packaging in hand, it looks gorgeous. Many brands are working on sustainability and ditching their packaging and tubes. This whisky still comes in a beautifully crafted tube. It’s like a sharp blazer: not essential, but it looks the part. In this case, it’s a purple jacket, and with it we get our first hints of what’s inside.

In honor of Robert Fleming

The whisky comes from an ex-bourbon American oak cask, followed by the finish we mentioned earlier: a Tawny Port cask. The master distiller is honored as well: “The Tomintoul whisky is a testament to our Master Distiller, Robert Fleming, whose family has been making whisky in the Speyside Glenlivet region for four generations.” The bottle itself looks neat and practically begs to be opened.
As soon as we pour the whisky, its deep red-brown color stands out. It’s strikingly rich and dark for the water of life, a clear sign of the cask’s influence. Whisky is usually lighter, more gold or yellow, but here we’re firmly in reddish-brown territory. On the nose, a sweet aroma immediately greets you: think dark berry jam on toast, with a ribbon of cherry woven through.

Sweet, sweeter, sweetest

We also pick up notes reminiscent of nougat and honey. On the palate, the sweet parade continues. The Tawny Port casks have clearly done their work. It’s so incredibly sweet that you might briefly wonder whether you’re sipping whisky or sneaking a taste of port. The berries are unmistakable on the tongue, joined by notes of chocolate, raisins, and hints of coffee. As you swallow, it’s as if you’ve just taken a sip of sweet cappuccino, with a few drops lingering behind. You might even catch a nutty note. A small bowl of nuts alongside wouldn’t go amiss.
In short, this whisky is wildly sweet. Hillman actually sells it short by calling it a typical “ladies’ whisky.” Why confine it to that? Women can love smoky whiskies too (me!). Tomintoul Tawny Port Cask is tailor-made for people who aren’t sure whether they like whisky but do enjoy port. This is exactly the kind of dram that can win over wine and port lovers to give whisky a try.

A lovely extra

For fans of mild and very sweet whiskies, this is a bottle worth keeping on hand. Do note that it has a distinctive flavor profile. It’s not one you’ll throw into every cocktail, and you may not want glass after glass in a row. But as an extra in your collection, it’s spot-on like a beautiful cookbook you don’t cook from daily, but happily revisit every month. Cheers!
