It’s Friday again, which means it’s time for a new Ask Us Anything. This time we’re talking about whiskies we discovered. What has the editorial team found this year? Maybe they’re brands that have been around for ages, or just a short while. It doesn’t matter.

At a tasting I discovered the brand
Tomatin Cù Bòcan. I’ve tasted very few whiskies from Tomatin in my life, so I didn’t—and still don’t—have a clear picture of the brand. This lightly peated variation, however, really won me over. If I come across one somewhere, I won’t hesitate to try Cù Bòcan or pick up a bottle.

Although I already knew about them, I’ve gotten a lot more familiar with Thy Whisky this year. Not only did I get to taste their beautiful expressions during the WFNN whisky dinner, I also had a wonderful conversation with Andreas that evening and learned a lot about their process. I now have a bottle of Thy at home and I’m thoroughly enjoying it.

I honestly couldn’t say, because I discover whiskies all the time. But which ones stood out? I don’t dare to pick. There is no whisky that sticks in my mind right now, though that’s not exactly ideal…

This year I discovered a whole bunch of whiskies, and plenty that pleasantly surprised me. One of them was an Aberfeldy: the 18 Year Old Sangiovese Cask Finish. This whisky spent time in Italian wine casks, adding a unique new layer to an already gentle spirit. If you get the chance, I’d definitely say give it a try or just bring a bottle home (especially if you’re partial to a good glass of wine).
So what is your ultimate whisky discovery of the year? Let us know in the comments below.
