Speyside was once home to Coleburn Distillery and although this distillery was very much in use until the late 90s, the story ended in 1985. In 1992, it was a dark chapter in Scotland’s history when the distilling license was permanently revoked.
But rejoice, there's excellent news now! The distillery is being given a new lease on life under the vision of D&M Winchester Ltd, as reported by The Herald.

What's in store for Coleburn Distillery?

The plans are bold: the heritage site is being repurposed as a productive distillery and a prestigious whisky and hospitality center.
With this important step, a few key individuals have already been recruited.
Keith Cruickshank has been brought on board as master distiller. He's no small name in the industry, with a 27-year stint at Benromach under his belt. You could say this man knows a thing or two about whisky production.
'My focus will be on developing a spirit that reflects the character of Coleburn and the wider Speyside region, using time-honoured methods and a thoughtful approach to production. Our aim is to produce Scotch whisky of the highest possible quality, rooted in authenticity and built to stand the test of time.'

Furthermore, the specialists from Organic Architects have been brought in to work on the project. Bari Reid, Director at Organic Architects, suggests that this project can make a significant contribution to the future of whisky production in Speyside.
'This is a unique opportunity to bring modern distilling practices together with a strong sense of place. The site’s history and its surroundings have formed our approach. Our plan aims to support low-impact production while reflecting the character of the region.'
- Bari Reid

When will Coleburn Whisky Resort open?

Construction for the plans will commence shortly. The whisky resort is due to be completed by 2027. The exact opening date of the distillery is unknown.
Besides distilling whisky, they will also include whisky lodges, a pagoda penthouse, and a bistro.
