There are many skilled craftspeople in the world of whisky. Both in Scotland and in other countries, you'll find passionate individuals who pour their heart and soul into our favourite beverage. Whether it's a distillery manager, a cooper or a master blender, there are many people with expertise in the divine drink. Today, we delve into the life story of whisky icon Dr. Bill Lumsden.
First Impressions Count Twice Over
Bill Lumsden was born in Greenock, a small village west of Glasgow. The taste for whisky was instilled in him from an early age. Both his parents had a predilection for blended whisky, and the elder Lumsden would let young Bill have a sip every now and then. Lumsden's love for Scottish single malt whisky started with a, what a coincidence, glass of
Glenmorangie 10 Years (now replaced with the 12, Ed.).
After high school, Lumsden studied Biochemistry at the University of Glasgow. He completed his PhD in fermentation sciences at the Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. With all this useful knowledge and a doctorate under his belt, it was no surprise that the young Scot ventured into the whisky industry. Lumsden began his career at United Distillers, the predecessor of Diageo, before becoming a distillery manager at Glenmorangie in 1995.
The Whisky Doctor
After a mere three years at
Glenmorangie, the leaders of The Glenmorangie Company recognized Dr. Lumsden's talent and promoted him to Director of Distilling, Whisky Creation, and Warehouse Operations. From that moment on, the Whisky Doctor was responsible for developing new, groundbreaking whiskies at both
Glenmorangie and Ardbeg. He works alongside other passionate innovators, like Gillian MacDonald, with whom we at Whisky Monkeys previously had a pleasant interview.
Some of his creations include the Glenmorangie Signet, Allta and the 'A Tale of...' series. At Ardbeg, the Whisky Doctor developed the popular Ardbeg Uigeadail, Corryvreckan and a wide array of Committee releases. With his boundless curiosity and boyish innocence, Dr. Lumsden and his team constantly experiment in Glenmorangie's whisky lab in Tain, Scotland. This architectural gem is also affectionately referred to as 'The Lighthouse'.
Innovative Prize-Winner
At the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC), Dr. Lumsden came out on top twice in 2007. The whisky innovator was named Global Ambassador of the Year and Scottish Distiller of the Year. In 2010, he also received the Outstanding Achievement in Scotch Whisky Award from the same organization, a prize for his trailblazing innovations. Dr. Bill Lumsden was crowned International Spirits Challenge Master Distiller of the Year in 2018.
That Dr. Lumsden is a real prize winner is also evident from the fact that he is one of the most acclaimed distillers at the International Whisky Competition. The creative icon has multiple times won the title of Master Distiller of the Year, including in 2016, 2017 and 2021. In the latter year, he also was awarded the prestigious Golden Barrel Trophy, a recognition of his exceptional contribution to the world of whisky.
We conclude this portrait with some wise words from whisky icon Dr. Bill Lumsden: 'For me, making whisky is 80% art and 20% science.'
