Nikka Whisky is getting ready to launch the Nikka Frontier Japanese whisky beyond Japan this month. South Korea and France will get the bottles first and soon after that more European markets will follow in the coming years.
The whisky was initially launched in Japan in October 2024 as part of the 90th anniversary of Nikka, but exclusively for Japan at first. Now everyone is finally getting the Japanese whisky.

The founder of Nikka is the inspiration behind the whisky

The Nikka Frontier was set up in honour of the founder of Japanese whisky, a figure in the history of Japanese whisky, called Masataka Taketsuru. In the present day, Taketsuru founded the Yoichi Distillery in Hokkaido in 1934, which is the heart of whisky production in Nikka.
The frontier blend consists of the largest portion of the peated malt whisky that is produced at the Nikka Yoichi Distillery. This gives the whisky a smoky taste. In the mixture, other malt whiskies are also blended, and more than 51% of the mix is composed of malt whisky.

Tradition design for a smoky Japanese dram

Nikka Frontier Japanese whisky is a smoky whisky that combines a bit of peat with fruity notes and a bit of spices. The whisky is bottled at 48% ABV in 500 milliliter bottles. The bottle design is an expression of the heritage of the brand. The front has a big N, which correlates with the typeface of the corporate logo of Nikka.
The shimenawa, a traditional Japanese Holy Rope, is embossed on the back of the bottle and is a common Japanese decoration of rice-straw that is commonly found at the entrance of the shrines. The logo acknowledges the sake brewing history of Taketsuru.

International growth and investment

Frontier's debut in the international market is included in Nikka's strategy to expand into foreign markets. Along with this release, the brand also released a Nine Decades limited-edition blend in honor of its 90th anniversary.
As a measure to keep up with demand in the future, Nikka spent approximately 7 billion yen (approximately 44 million dollars) in 2025 to increase its production capacity. The company has begun constructing a cooperage plant, a new maturation warehouse, and a vatting and blending plant in the Yoichi Distillery.
Nikka has also expanded its distribution channels by signing a contract with the South Korean alcohol distributor FJ Korea.
