Suntory backed out of a huge whisky project. The supposed construction of the almost 200 million dollar whisky maturation facility in East Ayrshire 'the Kingswell project' has been canceled. The project will not go through, but makes place for a more local approach.
A
Suntory representative stated that although the construction project will no longer proceed, the company remains deeply committed to
Scotland and the success of its Scotch whisky brands.
They added that while the Kingswell project is no longer moving forward, investment is being redirected to a local maturation facility. The company emphasized that its investment in Scotland will continue, with a focus on the long-term sustainability of its operations, brands, and contribution to the economy.
The project would bring more than 45 jobs to the region and would bring whisky back to it for the first time in a decade.
The Scrapped Original Plan
The original timeline is as follows. In 2023, plans for the whisky maturation site were submitted. It was intended to house warehouses for maturing Scotch whisky at South Drumboy Farm in Kilmarnock. Despite resistance from authorities, permission was granted for this project in March 2025.
Decline in Demand for Whisky?
Hypothetically, if the construction were to continue, the maturation site would be the catalyst for re-introducing whisky in the region for the first time in a decade. It will also pave the way for the creation of new jobs.
Yet, the decline in the demand for whisky is also seen as one of the reasons for this pause.
