Suntory stories of the distillery
Suntory is following up on a tradition that has rapidly become an annual event among the Japanese whisky enthusiasts.
The company has released the 2026 versions of its Story of the Distillery releases with new expressions of both Yamazaki and Hakushu. The series was commissioned following the 100th anniversary of Suntory in 2023 and is about the identity and environment of the two most renowned distilleries of the company.
The theme of this year is inclined towards nature and it demonstrates how every place influences the nature of the whisky.

Yamazaki 2026 Story of the Distillery

The Yamazaki release lays a lot of emphasis on the natural environment.
It is presented in an Echizen washi paper presentation box, and the artwork is based on Minase Falls, a popular location close to the distillery. Suntory also has a booklet which tells more about the history and location of Yamazaki.
The bottled whisky is 43% ABV and costs 17,600 Yen and will be released on 26 May 2026. The distribution will be done via a ballot between March 16 and April 16.

What is the taste of the Yamazaki 2026 whisky?

The Yamazaki 2026 whisky has a multi-layered palate for whisky lovers. Here are the tasting notes:
  • Nose: Dry sweet persimmon and a hint of clove.
  • Palate: Full and multi-layered, rich with red bean and orange marmalade.
  • Finish: Long and convoluted, light smoke and light spice.

Hakushu Story of the Distillery 2026

Hakushu takes a somewhat other turn, leaning towards its forest background.
The package once again is made of Echizen washi paper but this time it is decorated with birds which live on the grounds of the distillery. The whiskey itself is constructed out of smoky Hakushu malt, which is aged in Bourbon barrels and then mixed.
Similar to Yamazaki, it is bottled at 43% ABV, costs 17,600 Yen, and has the same release date and ballot system (May 26).

What does The Hakushu 2026 whisky taste like?

  • Nose: Pineapple, vanilla cream and roasted green tea.
  • Palate: Light and soft, sweet and slightly bitter.
  • Finish: The lingering bittersweet smoke.

A place and identity series

The Suntory Story of the Distillery series has become a manner in which Suntory has emphasized what makes each of the distilleries special.
These releases are not just about age or rarity, but rather attempt to demonstrate how the environment, water, and surroundings affect the end product, which is the whisky. It is a less aggressive strategy, yet one that would best suit Suntory.
Having this third edition, the series now seems to be an established one, and probably to continue its place in the annual Suntory lineup in the future.
