Lovers of grain whisky and peat can look forward to a flavorful whisky from Dutch soil. Distilleerderij de Bronckhorst has released a peated grain whisky that beautifully blends the boldness of Islay with the rustic character of the Achterhoek region in the Netherlands. Curious about how it tastes? Here’s our full review of the Dahomey Peated Grain Whisky.
In Zelhem, deep in the heart of the Achterhoek, Distilleerderij de Bronckhorst has been producing whisky for ten years. Although the distillery might still fly under the radar for some casual whisky drinkers, it has earned notable acclaim on the international stage.
In 2021, de Bronckhorst struck gold – literally – by winning a gold medal for its Dahomey Single Estate
Dutch Whisky. And that’s just one of the many awards they’ve collected. Today, their range includes several expressions, including their distinctive Dutch Grain whisky.
Golden flavor, ground up
Master distiller and owner Erik Legters takes a unique approach to whisky making. He works entirely regeneratively, caring not only for his African Dahomey cattle but also for the soil that grows his grain.
It might sound unusual, but to Legters, nourishing the soil is key. In his philosophy, grain character defines the whisky far more than the cask ever could. It’s this grain-first mindset that gives de Bronckhorst whiskies their distinctive flavor.
Scottish peat meets Dutch terroir
While each release of Dahomey whisky showcases Dutch terroir, this particular Peated grain whisky adds another layer: Scottish peat.
Distilled on 19 November 2020, this single estate whisky matured in a single Islay cask previously used to age a heavily peated Scotch. Which Islay whisky that was remains a mystery, but the cask has clearly left its mark.

Complex peat and earth
Pouring the light-golden whisky immediately releases a bold aroma of peat smoke: earthy and medicinal, reminiscent of bandages. The Islay influence is front and center, yet there’s depth underneath: malt, sultanas, a hint of salty maritime air, roasted coffee beans, mocha, and even toasted oak.
For peat lovers, the nose alone is worth savoring.
A peaty breakfast
Like de Bronckhorst’s Grain Whisky Double Cask, the Peated Grain Whisky coats the palate with an oily richness. The first impression is pure peat, rolling warmly over the tongue with subtle medicinal edges.
Hints of iodine mingle with chili pepper, fresh butter, and warm coffee. Earthy straw notes follow, intertwined with sweet touches of cocoa, cappuccino, toasted bread, ginger, and cinnamon. It's almost like a comforting Sunday breakfast layered with smoke.
At its robust 61% ABV, the dram is remarkably versatile: enjoyed neat, it’s bold and concentrated; add a splash of water, and the smoke softens, revealing more malt and grain-driven sweetness.
Conclusion Dahomey Peated Grain Whisky Review
The Dahomey Peated Grain Whisky is a striking marriage of Dutch craftsmanship and Islay influence. Its nose brims with earthy peat and medicinal hints, while the palate offers layers of roasted, spicy, and subtly sweet notes.
For peat fans seeking something off the beaten path, this Dutch single estate dram is a must-try.
